there is an oil fill tube on your valve cover..... that is where the oil goes in.....it has a big 2" screw on cap that has a picture of an oil can on it.... it probably uses between 5-6 quarts....

thanks for the quick response, anyway i can tell if ive put too much or not enough in?

by checking the dipstick

cool, thanks

Don't forget to check the muffler bearing. :D

Get a manual

Get yourself a manual-quick. The ones put out by Chiltons, Haynes will help you out with where everything is and what to do.

Dont overfill, put in 4 and check the stick, then add if you need more.

It should be about 5.5 quarts. It may be a bit less depending on how empty it is after draining.

got 6 quarts to be safe, we'll see how it goes, someone said something about muffler bearings??? derrrrrrrrrrrr..... wheres dem muffler bearings.... are dey cloos to da turbo supercharger?

thanks guys.. i love this forum, yall are very helpful

They are right below the blinker fluid reservoir.

its done 5w-30 mobile one synthetic, and a mobile one sythetic filter :) thanks again

the blinker fluid... DAMN... i knew i missed something, should i check my brake converter shield when i flush my blinker fluid? :D

All three engines took 5.0 quarts (including filter) in '97. I would guess that your 5.0L V8 takes the same amount.

Go to www.ford.com and go to the link "My Ford". Register your Explorer and it will give you access to the Owner's Guide and all booklets that were sold with your Explorer. The Chilton's and Haynes manuals can be very handy, unfortunately far to often they use generic information and I've seen a typo or two on specifications. I wouldn't totaly rely on them for accurate fill capacities. I would check it to the Owner's Guide first and correct the book if necessary.

5 quarts for the 5.0 6 quarts is too much
