all tires are different. as long as you rotate them regularly and don't see any uneven wear, they should last for years.
unless you peel out and smoke your tires often.

I think the rule is 1/16" of tread. With the explorers, its really important to rotate the tires regularly. I usually rotate every 5000 miles or so.

When you grow weary of riding on your rims.

or, whenever they get recalled.

check the tread indicators on the tires. there's a line where if your at that line your tires are "legally" bald

It really depends.. Our BFG AT KO's (32x11.50) are just under 1 year old and need to be replaced.. (40k+ miles in the last 11 months).. Our last set.. Yokohama Geolander MT's 31x11.50 only lasted us 25k miles.. it really depends on driving style and type of tire.. the best bet is to rotate them often and watch how fast they wear down..

There was a simple test on TV a long long time ago on how to check the tread depth to see if you need new tires. Take a penny and stick it down in the tread holding the penny with Lincoln's head facing downward. If the tread is above his hairline, its ok, but if its below, it needs changed.
