Good Evening,

I have a 1993 X, 125,000 miles 4x4 4-door

anyway, my breaks were squeeking, so i decided to replace them...(what an idea...) When i was changing them, my driver side front disk has a rather large crack in it. I was wondering how serious this is (what i could do to fix it, can i drive the car safely? etc.)

Thanks,
John

A crack on anything is never good. But I guess you already knew that. :)

thanks ALL!!!

I was also wondering, is this somehing i can safely drive on? Or is the car stick in the driveway until i can repare it?

Also what may have caused it? Is it just an old rotor, or is something else wrong with the breaks that is causing this?

Thanks again!
John

well, i've taken the thing apart to try to get it fix it. anyway,

there looks like some sort of washer and nut put together that keeps the wheel bearing and the rotor on the (spindle?) right behind the automatic locking hub.

Try as we might to get this off with a pair of channel locks we couldn't. The wheel studs kept getting in the wya. It looked like there'd be some sort of Ford direct Tool designed to do it. If you know what tool im talking about please let me know! Any help would be much appriciated!!!

Thanks a lot!!!
John

I would check out the sloted roters a Explorer Express if you have a few extra bucks to spend.
They are really sweet.

There is a small key between the bearing nut and teh spindle that you need to pull out before you can turn the bearing nut. I recomend a magnet of a dental pick and you might have to wiggle the bearing nut back and forth to take the load off it to get it out.

When you have the new rotor, bearings and seals, re-install and torque the bearing nut to 50 ft/lbs then back off 1/4 turn and re-torque to 16 ft/lbs put the key back in and reassemble your hubs.

good luck

rember you have to get 2 rotor because with brakes if you do anything to one you have to do the other side also
