I am looking for the torque for the front wheel bearings on an 02 Explorer. I replaced, but now have a terrible jerking at 60-75 MPH. Did I over tighten? 30 lbs of torque to much? in desperate need for some help here. This thing is listed for sale, and want it fixed ASAP. Appreciate all help. Thanks.

well. on the first generations, you're supposed to tighten to 20 foot lbs of torque, spin the wheel, then loosen, and tighten to 20 inch lbs. or about that. so if you tightened to 30 lbs, i'd say it's over tightened. someone that knows more about your generation might want to add though.

Okay, I'm confused but would like to be helpful.

The 2002 are sealed bearings, nothing to adjust. For 2002 4WD, the axle shaft nut is torqued to a very high value (will look it up later), but I seem to recall 250 ft-lbf or so.

wow. yeah, you're probably confused becaue i was talking about my first generation, so if the 02's are sealed you probably have no idea what i'm talking about.

you shoudl be able to call a local shop or store and ask them.

You can't really overtighten the bearing/hub assembly unless you've snapped the head off -- but I'd go back and check to make sure they are all tight (a quick tug with a wrench should do). If so, then I would go on and check other components and maybe get an alignment.

Actually, not having adjustable bearings is what confuses me - I don't recall having a car/truck ever before that I could not grease, inspect, and adjust the bearings. So I'm unsure about the ones I have now (but replaced X2), and am not really sure that they are an advantage, but I am so old school.

Hmmm.

Well I'm still at a loss. Called my local and got the bring it in! Bad thing is I had no issues before this drove great.

check this website.. i think they said ideal is 170
