In the rear of the explorer on the roof right next to the trunk door there are two of the 'push pins'. I had the idea to remove these and add some eye-bolts, so I can hang stuff or secure items in the trunk. Ended up costing a few bucks in nuts/bolts, but that's it. I don't know how much weight they will hold, but I've hung my backpack on it and it did fine; bolts didn't move or anything like that. Ok, so here's the instructions. (I tried to post pictures but it didn't seem to work, so I posted links also. Enjoy)
1. Pull the pins. These can be difficult to take out, but if you drive a ford, you've probably come into contact with these.
2. Cut off the 'pin' and leave the round disc. I just took a chisel and knocked the pins right off. Be sure to keep the round disc!
3. Drill a hole in the center of the disc, slightly smaller than the bolt you picked.
4. Now, insert the bolt through the disc (making sure to put the eyelet part on the outside of the disc), then put it through the hole in the headliner.
5. Pull the headliner down just slightly so you can see where to put the bolts. This is the tricky part...you have to be sure to get 2 nuts for each bolt, because there is only a hole in the place where I mounted these. Slide the bolt through the hole, putting one nut on each side of the hole. Use whatever you can fit in the space to tighten these down. I used a small crescent and needle nose pliers (hey, its all I could get in there). You can use lock-tite if you want to, but I don't think its necessary. Now just tighten it up, and check to make sure everything is in the right place. Now you've got strong, durable hooks in a place where nothing was before.
Hope you guys like it...I do, and it works for me.
