Hi, I have a couple of bad valves on my 98 xlt. I have not been able to find any information on how to change them. A full set of new intake and exhaust valves can be had on Ebay for under $80. So my question is, once I pull the heads off, how do I change the valves?

Aha!

This video makes it look pretty easy.

valve spring compressor

A special tool (Rotunda 303-381 or OTC T97T-6565-A) is required in order to compress the valve springs. It fits under the camshaft and pivots about it when compressing the valves. It might be possible to make an equivalent. The tool costs about $200.

Since even after you replace the valves you have no way to check the seats and make sure that the new valves will seal properly I would suggest taking the heads and the new valves to a machine shop and let them do a proper valve job on the heads, you are going to way too much effort not to have a good job at the end.
