A freeze plug you will know about as you would have a coolant leak. Look on the ground where you park. If it is hard to tell by the ground, get a large piece of cardboard or paper. Put it under the truck and secure it with rocks or whatever. Leave it overnight and see. If nothing, fire the truck and let it warm up and check the paper again.

A head gasket is harder to detect but look at your oil. Is it milky? Look in your radiator (with the engine cold), is there oil floating on the coolant. Those are easy checks. A compression test will tell you more.

Are you losing coolant? Is the truck overheating? Does your heater work fine?

Use a cooling system pressure tester to pressurize the system, then follow the green trail back to the leak. :) Simple as that!

Not sure if any of the local parts stores rent them anymore or not, but Stant makes a nice kit and can get any adapter needed for any vehicle.
