Currently, the X is FULL TIME 4WD. What do I need to do to convert this and the selection switch to an ON-DEMAND 4WD, meaning that I would NOW be able to drive it in 2WD when needed??

Thanks in advance.

My first thought would be to obvisously first purchase the correct selection switch, and then get a different transfer case.

v8boatbuilder has a how to thread on this. Check the 'useful threads' forum maybe. Or do a search on him.

I beleve the brown wire mod will work for you. but just so you know your fuel millage will stay the same.

Wait, are you a V8 or V6? V6s are not full-time 4wd.

Ditto... If you have a V-8, you will need to swap transfer cases. If you have a V-6, the brown wire mod will work for you. Changing the switch will not.

yes you both are right. After taking another look at the switch, it IS 4WD AUTO. So, YES, the brown wire mod is exactly what I'm looking for!

Thanks!

i just did it tonight on my 4.0 and let me tell ya, its fun!!!!!! i love 2wd

keep thinking about this but auto 4wd saved my ass a few times last winter. still considering.............

How? Please explain.

early morning rains in cold weather created ice on the road and as my ass end started to get loose on me I could feel the automatic 4wd kick in and straighten me out. I also drove thru a blizzard on interstate 94. I was doing less than 35mph and I got loose with a semi barreling up behind me, the 4wd kicked in and I straightened out. thank god I've driven rwd all my life and knew how to correct. the road was packed at least an inch thick with snow and then about 1/2 inch of ice over that.

u can still do the brown wire mod and have on-demand 4. on the switch it would be 2wd/4wd <--- thats the way mine works
