I've been looking over my manual. The only thing it doesn't cover very well is how to remove the driveshaft from the rear of the tranny. It's a manual in a '94 Sport 2WD. I see the joint there with the clips. I'm thinking that taking these out may be the ticket, but I'm not sure. Can someone chime in and give me a clue before I try this?

Much Gratitude...

The manual trans uses a slip yoke. You should just have to unbolt the drive shaft from the pinion flange, then give the drive shaft a good tug backwards.

Got it, thank you. I won't mess with the universal joint assembly then!
It's more simple than I thought. :D

Get a 12 mm 12 point socket and unbolt it from the tranny & rear axle. Make sure you mark the driveshaft & flange with a black marker or similar so you know the orientation.

I see, so go ahead and just drop the whole thing eh? Cool.

If you plan on working on the driveshaft or flat towing, I'd recommend dropping it entirely since it'll dangle down unless you secure it.

Excellent. Thanks for the advice. I might have to move it or adjust the height of it during the process, so I will go ahead and take it down.

What's the procedure for a 2000 Ranger 2WD Automatic as far as disconnecting the driveshaft for towing on a dolly?

2wd uses a slip yoke on teh rear of the transmission

unbolt 4 flange bolts from the rear axle flange, pull backwards on the d shaft and it comes off

but wont pulling the slip yoke allow all the fluid to come out of the tranny

about 4-5 ounces yes, just what is in the tailhousing.

If you tow it like this then you need to cap it off

They make a block off cap to prevent the steady drip of fluid from the back of the transmission. Putting the rear of the vehicle on ramps would tilt the vehicle forward to help prevent fluid from leaking out. It might be a good idea to replace the U joints while the driveshaft is already out.

Disconnect drive shaft for '97 4WD XLT?

Following this thread, what would be different in disconnecting the rear drive shaft on a '97 Explorer XLT 4WD 4.0L SOHC (as compared to the '94 manual tranny, 2WD that started this thread)?

When I went to UHaul's website to try and rent a trailer, after putting in the make and model of my Explorer, UHaul summarily informed me they would NOT rent me a trailer due to the excessive amount of litigation associated with the make and model and that I have to rent their smallest truck and tow the Explorer on a dolly, hence the driveshaft question.

Me thinks this must have been related to the exploding Firestone tire debacle years back which would have been exacerbated by the towing load.

Thanx,
