try putting new brake pads in. I had mine squeak for a while then I got tired of it and changed the pads w/ metallic carbon pads. And sure enough got rid of the squeaking!

If it is kind of "chirping" you need new brake pads. There is a built in piece of metal that will vibrate against the rotor producing a chirping noise to warn of low brakes. Just a thought

Brakes

I'm starting to have a chirp sound coming from the left front area. The sound inceases in tempo the faster you go. The sound dissapears during the time you apply the brakes. The presence of the sound is not dependant on engine rpm or gear selection of the transmission. I have not driven the vehicle in reverse to see if it happens then.

Some of you suggest brakes are worn and that the sound is the wear indicators. A couple of things- shouldn't there be more than one wear indicator going off (the left front brakes do/should work harder and wear faster than the others do???) and secondly, I bought the Explorer at 38,000 miles and while I cannot speak to the driving habits of a previous owner, the vehicle now has 51,000 miles- the last 13,000 of which I have driven the car safely and gently as possible, including gentle braking but for occasional times where the moron in front of me was to close to the car in front of it and we all had to almost panic brake when things came to a halt from a good rate of speed.

If it matters, my Explorer is V-8 with the All Wheel Drive option. I assume that is of no consequence.

Thanks,
Brad

The only thing you can do to be sure is pull the tire and check the pads.

I can hear mine squeak as I cruise through a parking lot, but don't make a noise when applying brakes. I checked them and there is plenty of pad left, I regreased the slide pins and they still squeak, so I just contribute it to cheap pads the previous owner had put on. I went ahead and bought some new Bendix metallic pads, but I figured I would make use of the pad I have left. I don't know it does drive me crazy sometimes, maybe I'll replace them sooner since I have the pads and their just sitting there.

Usually squeeks are because of wearing pads and exposed metal parts rubbing through. Squeeking is usually a sign to change the pads. And grinding usually leads to having the get new rotors because you've worn the pads down to metal.

if the pads are new/in good condition, then you might need new calipers. i put brand new pads in and they squeaked at low speeds - replaced the calipers now theyre good as new

some times your brakes can start to squeek when the seaons change.
