How to get 2 more speakers in

I have a 2000 4dr XLT and the main speakers are in the front (2) and then in the back seats (2). Well when you are in the back....it sounds pretty crappy. I was just wondering how exactly I'd go about putting just two 6x9s in the trunk area. Also, how would you position them. It'd be nice to mold them somehow to the pillar in the rear on the trunk door. But would I just need an amp and thats it? I'm guessin it's the same as setting up subs, just...different types of speakers. Thanks everyone.

I mounted two 6x9's in the rear hatch of my 93'. had to install some heavy sheet metal under the plastic trim. works real well, just make sure you use some caulking on the sheet metal to prevent rattes

my suggestion-get 2 amps, build a custom sub box, put 2 subs in it, and 2 6x9s, subs to one amp, speakers on the other

i'm in the process of upgrading my system, had 4 stock 6x8s, took out cause i blew one, replaced with all kenwood, sound so much better, have a twin 10" bandpass and 800w amp in rear now, building a new sub box to hold four 10" subs and will mount 2 800w amps to it, i'll post pics of box when finally complete, i personally don't want to mess with plastic trim cutting and sheet metal, i can do it all quick in the truck with wood and lots of watts

I think all I really want is more sound and the ability to turn it up loud. I don't want a lot of bass, but I might go with just an 8 inch. But I think I'm going to stick with the 6x9s in the rear and maybe throw some tweeters in the back seats. How do you go about tweeters? I never understood those. Thanks

I don't think tweeters w/o the other parts would work to well, either way you would need a crossover (tweets don't need as much power as other speakers)

this is an awful idea. get better speakers and more power up front, and add subs so that the front speakers don't have to play frequencies they struggle with.

All I want to do is get more sound to the back, not more bass. The tweeters I was gonna put in there after I got aftermarket door speakers. I had subs in my old cherokee and I didn't like it. But thanks for the opinion.

I don't understand how it sounds crappier in the back. From this I am deriving that you still have stock speakers (correct me if I am wrong). However, even if you do, aren't the speakers located in all 4 doors (they are in my explorer). So how could the sound be different in the back than the front? That makes no sense.

Furthermore, if you still have stock speakers, just replace them with some good 6x8's (fit perfectly, no modification at all) from pioneer, kenwoood, infinity, or even JL has some. If you want "more" sound, get an external amp (or preferably 2) and some good components (from alpine, or frankly any of the other listed brands) and you will have "more" sound, and in all likelyhood, better sound.

Stock speakers - correct. But, if the explorer is how i think its set up it has 4 door speakers....and two tweeters in the dash. My Cherokee had speakers in the front doors and all the way on the rear hatch door. The Cherokee sounded a whole lot better, so I was thinking all I would have to do is put speakers in the back on the door there to make it sound better. The cherokee also had two tweeters mounted in the front of the dash. But maybe the explorer is set up differenlty. I just know that higher freqs are reproduced better in the front than in the back seats. Just sounds empty back there because there is no sound coming from the rear. Do you understand it all now? Sorry for the problems.

I agree, while in the backseat, all the sound is shot right into your leg and the seats. In the front the speakers are a little further ahead and allow the speakers to sound off with having much block the sound like the back. I would go with something like ammo troop has done, buy 6x9 boxes, place a sheet of sheetmetal or something behind the plastic on your rear hatch and mount the boxes to your hatch. And I believe you can mount the amp behind the plastic trim in the trunk or where ever you want to put it. Maybe even mount it on the hatch between the 6x9's, but I don't think the cylinders will hold up the weight.

Your cherokee probably came with better speakers. I honestly don't know what the trouble is, even before I upgraded my speakers my sound was not that bad (no where near as good as it now of course, but hardly horrible) and though I never sit in the back, I have passengers all the time that sit in both the front and back and none of them have ever complained. Check and make sure that on the stereo the speakers are all set in the middle for fade and balance. But if you are serious about sound, then just upgrade the hu for 150 bucks, and get some speakers from a site online for 50-60 a pair. You could even get it professionaly installed and not spend more than 300 total. If you don't want subs, you can get by without them easily enough, just get some 3-way or 4-way 6x8's and they can handle all the bass you will need for a pretty low price. Just make sure you upgrade your headunit of course, since whatever you have from the factory will make anything sound like crap.
