How to pull engine codes??

I have a 98 Explorer with 50,000 miles and no modifications. The Explorer twice died this weekend while driving. I have no idea what the problem is.

Is there any way to pull the engine malfunction codes without taking it to a mechanic?

You could go to Wal-Mart or an auto parts store and pick up a code reader. Several around the boards have had good luck with the relatively inexpensive (around $40) store bought code readers. I've used mine several times to diagnose problems with my and my parent's Ford vehicles. Hope this helps.
