how to read codes

using a walmart version of the code readers. got everything hooked up and with the key on engine off tests is should get a series of blinks. what are the most common ones if anyone knows. i see a lot of people talking about different codes with a letter attached like a p5 meaning something....could some one tell me the meaning of the series of flashes or what is the easiest way to use this unit if anyone has experience with this type of unit.

You have a EEC-IV computer. This means you will just get numbers (e.g. 13 )..

People with ODB-II (1995+ If I remember correcly.. but it may have started in 96 on the x) get codes like p1011.

The ODBII computers have more sensors and usually have a better idea of what is going on (but not always)..

Your code scanner should have come with a book to give you the codes and what they mean.
