How to replace a wheel stud

I searched around this forum and found that you need to use a washer and a bolt to install a new stud. Can someone tell me the best method to do this without causing any damage? any help would be appreciated.

I use a big C-clamp and a deep dish socket to press them in.
 






how would the c-clamp be used to press them in?
 






put the bolt in, place a deep dish socket over the the stud on the wheel side then use the c-clamp to press them in.
 






how hard is it to get the stud out? do they require a excessive amount of force to remove or do they just pop out?
 






it took me 2-6 swings with a BFH to knock out the wheel studs on my '72 GS. Except for the one I broke that one was a little more subborn.
 






I guess my 2000 exp sport is different because the abs speed sensing wheel is in the way and it looks like i won't be able to get the broken stud out. Had to take the disc off to get a better view and the abs wheel is in the way. Oh well time for new discs anyways might as well get the whole deal. Thanks for all the help though.
 






When I worked at a muffler shop we used to blow torch them out.
 






The way I've replaced studs is to knock the old stud out with a hammer and punch. Put the new stud in and pull it in tight with the lug nut on backwards. That way you won't mess up the tappered end. No special tools needed.
 






Everyones giving you good advice. I believe there is a tool because I think the only reason the recommend you not putting the lug nut on and tightening that down until it sits right is because you'll be pulling on the threads pretty hard and you don't want to stretch the bolt out. But anyway -- that is how we do ours at work as well, get them out somehow by either hammer or torch and then putting the new one in and tightening it up with the impact gun. Good luck

definitely one of the easiest/fastest ways with an impact.
 






wheel spacer problem!!!! HELP!

ok, so i just bought some cheaper wheelspacers (4) for my 1991 explorer sport and i went to put them on today and i didn't have enough stud left over to tighten the lug nut down after i put the tire on...........So i have to punch out the orginal studs and install longer ones. My question is.........How long of a new stud should i get?
 






believe me when i tell you this there is NO special otc tool or snap on tool just to remove broken wheel studs, i ve worked at a dealership for 4 years. the wheel stud has a knurled end on it to keep from spinning when it s pulled in to the stud hole'

the only thing we do is tap it out with a short punch and hammer, you might have to heat it up but not usually.

to install it the only thing we do is pull it on with an impact wrench . as long as the stud is being pulled in you won t damage the threads...
 






let me see if i can help you out here and relieve some of your questions ok?
first of all when the axels or hubs are build those studs are pressed in with a hydraulic press before their put on the truck so unless you want to remove the axle and or hub your gonna have to tap is out using a short puch and heavy hammer.

now putting it the stud back in , think about this 1 min ok when you place those wheels back on the truck on my 2001 explorer their suppossed to be torqued down to 100ft/lbs of torque.
now when you place that new stud in the hole put a washer on it and place the beveled side of the nut away from the hub,and tighten it down, in actuality if you used a hand held torque wrench( which is not recommeded)BUT,,, if you did it should NOT take over 100ft/lbs of torque to pull the stud through the hole and seat it flush ok.... and think about this alot of time when these tire shops tightedn your wheels with a air impact gun they re over tighten the nuts anyhow you just don t know it ...they may as well be over stretching the bolt using as much 150+ ft/lbs of torque, so my advise is don t think so much about if just do the best you can, i really think you ll be ok.....
 






I think you are all missing something important here how do you get the ABS sensing ring off mine is stuck on and i dont want to break the damn thing
 






i just did mine last week for the rear. now, when u get the rear lug, make sure u ask for the rear lug. get the rotor off. bang the crap out of the lug, then, rotate the sucker till it falls out of the bottom. now, u can fish the new lug in, angel it a litttle and turn the axle towards it and it will stick out of the hole, and pull it out. now, get a bigger nut, and then use your regular socket on the lug and, tighten the crap out of it and it will come out and u are good to go
