I am posting this as I didn't see a full end to end write up on this. For Starters, my shifter didn't work, the black adjusting stem had snapped so I was off to a junkyard. Note: It always helps to take the part off in a junkyard prior to your car.

What is needed, a 6M socket, Phillips screwdriver, some patience.

Follow the instructions on how to get the instrument panel off, (although not needed it gets you to the point of only having the covers on the steering column.

Start by removing the upper and lower covers around the steering column. All from underneath, three on the bottom piece. Once you get the bottom off, there is still one screw from underneath on the drivers side halfway on the column that is holding on the top piece. Access to the top is the way to go.
You need to unclip the piece right above the steering column that has the piece of vinyl/leather?.

Once all removed here is the order I did the tasks. Remove the 6M set screw on the white retainer/adjustment piece that the indicator wire goes through.

Pushed on the two retaining clips at the bottom of the panel

followed the wire to the part on the column which is a small circle/post. You can see it from under the column but work from the top.

do not break the wire off, you want the loop off that post.

To install I hooked the new wire first onto this post. Give yourself enough slack by moving the indicator to the left on the slide so as much wire as possible is exposed. Then from the top you are trying to hook the wire by feel only, push on the loop to make it a circle, it will be easier to lasso the post.

Some trial and error and once it is hooked. then connect set screw (in white plastic) then push indicator in place.

Once in place, time to make the adjustments, I went to drive and adjusted on D and then confirmed the rest lined up.

I can add photos if needed. I saw a number of posts on zip ties, etc. but if you have a local junkyard, (Explorers are always there) then get the piece for $5 and fix.
