I'd like to take out the overhead console on my '02 Explorer to hard wire my GPS. Does any one have experience or know how to take it out and how to connect the wires from the GPS to the wires in the console?
I am not sure if you have the homelink garage door system or not and if you have a moonroof or. Thsi would help a bit. However if you do not have either of yours then your ex is just like mine. open the garage door opener holder (i guess thats what you call it) and there should be two screws, then you will be able to pop it down, it is held in with two clips in the front of it. you will need to disconnect some wire harness for the lights and if you have rear heat/ac you will need to disconnect those as well. As far as wiring the GPS I cannot help you. I know there is a wire harness for the homelink system already there even if you do not have it. You mayn be able to pull power from it. I hope thsi helps.
I removed the overhead console and attempted to find a power source. I tried a few and couldn't seem to find one. Also, didn't have any luck trying to find somewhere to attach the ground wire.
Can someone who has done this in this area help me out with some pics or something?
BTW, the truck has no homelink no moonroof, and there is no wire harness for the homelinks system in the console.
Mine was supposed to be removed on Friday for an installation, but postponed until Wednesday. But I believe there is a link... let me see. Be right back...
Not to assume you didn't, but when you check for power in the overhead console, you have to have the key turned on. All that wiring is on the ignition circuit, and won't energive without the key on.....

I have a Kenwood KVT-915dvd (touchscreen in-dash 7" dvd unit) and this unit had an additional GPS addon feature for a couple hundred so i just spliced into the in-dash wiring for it and ran the wires that way? if you give me the model or item you are planning on installing I could help you with the best attempt to do it yourself.
