Explorer 2004 XLT 4WD 4.0
Hello! I've bought my 2004 Explorer 4WD 4.0L about 2 years ago in bad condition and trying to fix it and get rid off some mods that I don't need including BWM.

So, we've simply cut off the switch and connected two sides of brown wire like from factory. Seems like it's not enough because now I'm getting P1824 error code.
There are many threads about how to make brown wire mod, sometimes where are defferenet ways and I don't know exactly the way it done on my car.

I don't know why, but in cold winter 4WD works well most of the time and there is no any errors. If P1824 appears, I'm turning off the engine and start it again, after that I can drive the whole day without any errors. If my explorer parked for couple of hours, error can appear again and I can fix it by turning off the engine and starting it again. In summer I'm driving with error almost all the time. I can switch 4WD modes on my panel, but car will stay RWD even on 4WD LOW mode.

Any ideas how to fix this issue?

P.S. sorry for my English, it's not my native language

How did you connect the wire ends? Soldering or any other method?
Did you get flashing 4x4 light now? Did the 4x4 light work on selftest?
Did you check the depending fuse?

P1824 points to a 4x4 drive clutch relay cicuit failure, so maybe the relay is bad
or there is a ground wire problem on the shift motor. Sometimes the 4x4 module went bad.

Here is a thread
where someone else put in another relay. So i would follow the wires from the old BWM switch,
where did they go and where did they end.

regards

Connecting the two wires should be all that’s needed. If there wasn’t an issue before, with the switch in either position, it’s probably something you changed.
