Ok, I bought my 91 Navajo about 2 months ago and have not had a functioning HU since I bought it. My stepfather sold me the truck and said the truck has been through 2 HU (the stocker and the el-cheapo tape deck he had installed). I pulled the HU about 2 weeks after getting the truck and noticed that the fuse in the back of the HU was blown. So, I proceeded to install 3 more fuses and watch them blow the second I re-connected the power :banghead: . What could be the problem? Should I just take this to an audio shop before I install a new HU?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds to me like there it a short in either the constant power wire, or the switched power wire. You may have to get a meter and a vehicle schematic and try to trace down the short. Either than or run yourself new constant and switched wires. A vehicle electrician is another option if you dont want to mess with it, but they are usually not cheap. Good luck.

Are you saying that the fuse is blowing that is located in the fuse panel or is there an added in-line fuse installed and that one is blowing? If it is the later, an installed in-line fuse that is blowing, it could be something simple as the fuse is too small for the load. Do you know what size fuse is getting blown?

It's the actual fuse in the back of the head unit itself. I'm assuming it's the fuse that came stock with the unit. It was a 10amp fuse and I was replacing/blowing other 10 amp fuses when trying to fix it.

Then you have a dead short in the HU. Open it up and see if you can spot it with the eyeball.

The HU that's in there now is a piece of junk...I have a Sony eXplod (yeah I know :p ) cd player from my old car ready to install. So, you think it would be ok to go ahead and install my Sony HU and not have to worry about fuses blowing again?

Thanks guy, for all your advise. This site is great...especially considering the condition I got my Navajo in :chug:

WOOT got it working!!

I guess the old HU was the problem afterall. I hooked up my new HU with no problems whatsoever. :smoke: But, it sounds like I still have the stock speakers that came with the truck so 2 of them crackle and the other speakers just sound weak especially when I turn the bass up. Looks like it's time for new speakers too. :bounce:

Thanks guys!

Looks like I read the post wrong, and gave incorrect advice. I apologize, its good to have people like BBQ to back me up!!! I was thinking something TOTALLY different! Anyways, im glad you got the problem figured out. I can, however, offer a good suggestion for a low priced, middle of the road speaker. The Pioneer 5x7 that Walmart sells. I have been into audio for a LONG time and am one of the very few people that can tell the difference between 192 kbps MP3's and CD Audio. This being said I certainly have a trained ear for speaker perforamnce. For $57, you simply CANNOT go wrong with these speakers. Before I got my Alpines, I had 2 pair of these in my truck, and simply put they sounded great. Its true, the Alpines bring out more of the subtile details of certain music, but if your just running the speakers off the deck power, and not using a high quality amp, its not going to make much difference(if any) to you. In your situation, theres really no reason to spend more. Hope this helps, and congrats on the Navajo! I just converted my Navajo front end to an Explorer due to lack of parts, but im still in the Navajo club! Got any pics???

Great! Thanks for the advice on speakers. I was going to start looking for something with good bang for the buck. I assume there's only 1 type of 5x7 Pioneer speaker that WalMart sells? So, I'll know it when I see it. I might make a trip this weekend.

As for pictures I had some...I think I even posted some awhile back when I first registered but I've deleted them since. I plan on waxing the Navajo for the first time this weekend, I'll take some more pics and post them here this weekend. :smoke:

Yea, they are a standard 2 way 5x7 and handle 120watts peak. I have seen them in just about every walmart i have seen. What color is your Jo?

I just checked your website out last night. My Navajo looks just like yours when it was stock. white, 5 speed, 4x4 Only mine has a couple rusty spots. and has 284,000 miles.

Right on man!!! Hopefully you will still get a lot of use out of it!
