Factory HU problems

OK...I hope you guys can help me out. The factory HU in my '98 is taking a s@*t. Some discs play perfectly for 30 mins. or so until they start sounding like crappy mp3s, skipping quite a bit, and hanging at track breaks. Others (that work fine elseware) sound like crap and have all the other probs right from the get-go. I've tried cleaning the lens w/ one of those brush discs, but it didn't help...any other suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet and go aftermarket?

FYI...I bought the truck w/ 65K on it and have personally put 20K on it. I don't use the radio (EVER) so I've probably put about 500 hours or so on the player myself (in addition to the previous owner).

I would. I have been having trouble with mine since I bought my 98 new. The radio is built by Pioneer. I talked to a budy who is a Ford mechanic and he told me that that is the worst radio Ford every had. They have more problems with the radios in those trucks than any other.
