Here's the scoop.

I bought a pair of Pioneer 6x8 4-way 52wx4 speakers and installed them into the front. My HU was a Clarion Minidisc 45wx4 unit. I noticed right away that when playing heavier bass music (like guitar bass) with it turned up load there was a sharp popping randomly that shouldn't have been there. Then the next day the music would actually cut out and then come back on and waiver in and out. So it seems my HU was going bad, the amp or something.(I seemed a little strange to me it waited until right when I installed new speakers to do so. So then I put the Stock Ford Basic 24wx4 single CD HU back in it. This HU is only a year old and has probably only been used for six months. Well the first day everything seemed good, the popping was gone and it sounded good. The next day I started getting static when playing CDs as though I was listening to a radio station. So I thought may there was something wrong with the speakers and took them back and exchanged them for the same ones. Well I have the same problems with the new ones so it doesn't seem like it's the speakers. When I first start listening to the CD it's fine but then starts and gets worse the longer I play it. I had the balance and fade pretty much in the middle. If I switch the balance more to one speaker or the other the sound gets better or is fine. The same if I switch the Fade farther to the front. So that seems like a HU problem to me also. But it shouldn't be going bad yet. And it seems fishy this is happening to both HUs right after installing the new speakers. The wiring is good I pretty sure. I'm using speaker adapters but the connections are nice and tight and no visual problems in the adapters. The rest of the wiring was fine before this so I don't think it's wiring grounding out or anything like that.

Can speakers kill HUs for some strange reason? That kind of seems what's happening. This is really bothering me. Anyone have any ideas?

Also I think I may have read something about some materials you mount speakers on can release static into them creating sound problems? This time around I may gaskets out of sheets of the 2mm thick craft foam so I wouldn't get vibration between the speakers and the mounts. The wouldn't be doing anything would it? It doesn't seem like a staticy material at all.

Thanks

I appologize that I don't know for sure, but some 98+ Ford HUs still have an external amp. If your truck originally had an external amp and it's still in the system, that's the problem.

Hmm, didn't know that. In in the past have used a stock HU with an external amp in a '96 and upgraded speakers without anything problem. As well as an aftermarked HU in the same setup without problems.

I should also mention that the Ford CD HU I'm using is out of a 2003 Sport.

maybe its the fact that is a 4 way speaker... if you could try something else like a 2 way or 3 way it might fix it... i heard that there isnt really a point in having 3 or 4 ways (unless they are component) because the speakers other than the woffers are all tweeters.

I was kind of wondering if it was the speakers themselves some how. In my old X I had a similar setup with Pioneer speakers except the were only 2 or 3 way with no problems. I think they were 2 way. Even if the 4 way is an over kill is there any reason that it should actually be staticy like that though? I wouldn't think so?

well im a trial and error person, so i would just test out a different speaker just to see if its even a speaker problem, if its not then thats just one less thing to consider
