hub buzz

hopefully someone can shead some light on this problem.

I recently cleaned my front hubs of all the hard packed grease and such from the previous owner. I relubed with differential fluid (80w 160 or so...)
previously they would lock but would have problems unlocking (occasionally would hear a buzz and a clunk from the drive line)

now I'm not sure if I reassembled them wrong or what..

they don't fully disengauge (they buzz and pop). unless they sit for a few minutes not moving.

the parts didn't look too warn, though I dont know what they look like unworn.

I did have a gear that was a little intresting looking in the aluminmum part though... (thats held on with speed nuts)

i removed the split ring in the bottom to remove the bearing and the unique gear attatched to it. A cylinderical gear (about 2" long). On this part there is a ring or lock that slides along that cylinderical that had an intresting look (that part is the piece that has 3 or 4 cone shaped parts on it that interlock with the portion that stays on the spindle/rotor)

anyway opposite of those 3 cones on this ring the interior spline was sticking out further than the outter portion. (it was unique looking) is this why it may not work... I'm not entirely sure how the hubs engauge past the tabs interlocking.

its internal spline extended out further than the race around the outside. (it kinda looked like a backwords castle nut)

if this is what is worn would changing over to manual hubs remedy this issue?

if that is normal then what is the correct way to reassemble it. is alignment between the alumimum outter part and rotor important or does it matter?
 






If you're getting a ratcheting sound from the hubs that means they are beginning to fail, and it's time to switch to manuals. The manuals are much more durable than the autohubs.
