I can't find the 4WD shifter.

hi, i have a 1997 ford explorer with a 4wd high and low light but i dont know on how to engage it. the book is of no help.

If you have 4 wheel drive, there is a knob on the dash near the radio. Its an electrically shifted transfercase. If you do not see one, you have 2 wheel drive, unless you have the 5.0 liter engine. In that case you may have AWD. (The 5.0 was available as 2 wheel drive and AWD, neither of which will have that switch)

if its a 5.0L truck there will be no switch, it is full time AWD
the reason you see lights, is all 97's have the same dash... so the spot for the lights is there

my 96 was AWD, now its 4x4 and I hooked up the lights!! (thanks to help from this forum)
 












If he's got the lights, he should have 4WD. The AWD and 2WD Explorers don't have the Hi and Lo lights in the cluster (rightmost overlay). Mine doesn't anyhow.
