I found this place looking for a fix to a transfer case problem on my 98 Sport. Guess what? I used the search feature and figured out I may oughta take a look at the speed sensors.....

Only thing I didn't find was any reference to noise under acceleration. From what I have read here, the lights flashing 6 times indicates a sensor problem. But, if I get into the gas a a little hare, the 4 wheel sounds like it is trying to engage. Is this normal? Or is this a bigger problem? Thanks in advance guys and gals.

welcome corey,
glad to see that you have made some good use of the search feature.

as far as your noise problem goes, you might want to start ruling out what Isnt causing it. meaning troubleshoot things one at a time. the front suspension on all explorers gets pretty noisy when things start to wear out. which light is flashing? is it the check engine light? or the 4x4 hi or lo lights? there are probably more threads on this site about transfer case problems than most anything else. if you think thats the problem, then you should do some research on the shift motor. if you can rule that out, then you can get an idea if the clutch has worn out. the control trac tcase(borg-warner 4405) uses a clutch mechanism to transfer power to the front axle when needed.

if that doesnt help ya at all, then at least my post will bump your question to the top of the new member forum. then someone else might be able to help ya out.
