OK i failed for inspection this morning for emissions, My NOx was 1677 when it should have been 990, and my HC was 262 when it needed to be 147. Any idea why I am getting such high readings? O2 sensor or cat? I'm not sure if I will do the repairs myself or go to a shop yet. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Jeff

Well you need to ask yourself how your truck is running? Is the motor running well or is there something wrong with it? Do you have a CEL? You may also have a bad cat. replacing the oxygen sensors every few years is a good idea and it may help your emissions as they're an important part of the emissions system. If all else fails theres always marvel mystery oil, that stuff is gaurunteed to pass your car. :p

Before you spend any money on repairs, run several cans of fuel injector cleaner through the vehicle and see what condition the plugs/wires are in. If the plugs are old/worn/dirty, they can contribute to a failed emissions test because they aren't fully burning the air/fuel mixture.

You can also help your emissions by running some acetone in the tank. Acetone will do several things, including cleaning the fuel system. Usually you run 1-2 oz of acetone per gallon of gas. Do a search here on "acetone" and you'll find all sorts of info (some good, some not so good :) ).

See, the thing is, even with 174k miles, it runs like a top. In NJ, i have to provide reciepts for parts and repairs to get it reinspected, and i can't measure the levels, the last thing i want to do is fail again, then i'll really be screwed. I check a few of the things out you guys mentioned.

I'm so glad I don't have to deal with NJ emssions any more. :p

I had a '96 chevy corvette which failed because someone had downloaded a new program into theECM. I took it to the state DMV inspection about 6 times before I figured it out. What makes you think you only can get it inspected 1 more time....
