i have sythethic oil in my 97 and its got about 4k on it. I'll be changing the oil filter out today and topping the oil off. I feel so dirty by doign this..i've always done full oil changes every 3k. this seems so wrong.

but either way i have to get that nasty Fram filter off there (i won't be using fram any more thanks to some research i've read)...just feels so bad to just change the filter.....make me feel better guys hehehee.

What's wrong with that?? I change my oil every 5000 miles. Since you have synthetic oil, don't worry about changing it way past 3000 miles.

Heh...my girlfriend's Civic is running dino oil and she has yet to change the oil. She's almost 8,000 miles over.

Be the hero and crawl under there and change it for her, i am sure she will be grateful ;)

I always say I would, but whenever we're home, we're always busy doing other things. But one day...I will get to it.

i'm not so much worried bout the oil as i am bout the filter... i place no faith in FRAM as a filter maker any more.

thats weird my girlfiend has a civic too, and its about 5k over on her dino oil.

I know since I read the tests on the Fram filter(wich I always used) I have never used them again. I went back to the tried and true MotorCraft FL1A filter.

While I run Mobil 1 oil I still change every 3,000. Just does not seem right to go any more on it, like a old goat, I can't change my habit. :) :banghead:

I had a shop teacher in high school that showed us a piston out of a car that a woman didn't change her oil for like 25,000 miles!!! Apparently it was so bad that the piston fused into the cylinder and they had to break it out with a hammer. Considering these a precision parts, this thing was absolutely horrible looking!

I run Castro Syntec 10W30, and rarely change my oil under 5k. What is so bad about Fram? I use motorcraft filters, but i have used Fram.

Last week we were taught in school to still change synthetic oil on a regular schedule (3000-5000) miles. The oil may still be fine, but the additives are still the same as in dino oil and still are "used up" or "wear out".

We watched an Amsoil promotional video in which they said to change the oil every 30k, but the filters every 5k (for a full and bypass filter system). Think about it: when you change the filters you're changing 20-35% of the oil in the car anyway! The video also said the Amsoil was a little more likely to be "used" by the motor, so you'd also have to add a bit on top of the filter change.

Therefore, is it worth it?

in my mom's 94 EX we change the oil every 10k..she has mob1 syn in it..you should be fine

WOW !!!! Alec, over 15,000 posts. DAAAAANNNG

I have never used any oil with either Mobil 1 or Amsoil with extended mileage changes.; all with excellent oil analysis results.

hhhhmm all very intresting.
perhaps i'll just use my synthehic oil to about 4500 miles and then change it all out....thats a pretty decent number...could push it more but i'm fairly used to going every 3k...and frankly don't mind the oil changes :)

Hes even got his own little spot on the front page

I got my first start with Amsoil synthetic and changed it at 25,000. I did a filter change at 12,000 and added 1 quart to bring it up to full. I did this on a Chevette that I ran 245,000 miles on in less than 4 years. I started the synthetic at 12,500 miles, and at the end of 245,000 miles, the car was using just that one quart of oil a year. Several times during that time, I sent in oil samples for analysis (Amsoil does this to check actual oil change needs) and the oil always came out good on the tests. The car is still running now (the person that bought it drove it around town for 2 years, then her daughter drove it from Wisconsin to Arizona for college and back... Extended oil life is one of the beneifts from the good synthetics. (Royal Purple, Red Line, Amsoil) but as far as I can tell, not the cheaper stuff, (Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil 1, etc.) It has to do with the long chain molecules and the speed which the oil breaks down. Some are designed to run at long intervals, some are designed to be more like dino oils...

I now run sythetic in all my vehicles in all areas where it is used. It truly makes a difference, especially in cold climats. Do a search for some other posts I have made on this forum about oil and filter testing.

Every 3,000 , heck my frienddrives a 99 Mustang GT with dino oil and has put on about 20,000 miles since his last change. It's not that the oil is mine he is just extrememly lazy and doesn't want to change it. Oh well, the poor stang is starting to seriously run like garbage.

With dino oil that motor's life is over...

I know, its sad, really :(

I went 10000 miles with out a chang on a 98 mustang and it clogged the passages and starved the valvetrain (v6) end result was a stuck exhaust valve and both head needed to be rebuilt. I change my oil every 3000 miles now :O

And I'd like to hear from someone who hs positive knowledge, but I understand FRAM changed their filter design a couple years go an they are not a bad as they once were.
