So I know it has been brought up before... "Can I buy a new tranny and get 4wd?" and the answer is always "It'll be cheaper to sell yours and buy a new one".

BUT!

What if all the parts are free?

My aunt has an '04 xlt 4x4 with a blown 4.0 in it. She said I can have it if I pay for the title and BS like that. It is in perfect shape, but the engine is "hosed" (mechanics words).

The way I see it I have 2 options. A) drop my 4.6 into the new ex or B) pull the tranny and swap out all my stuff.

I'll part it out if I do it, then scrap the rest. That means I "should" make money on the whole project.

Ehat do you guys think? Will the tranny for a 4.0 bolt up to my 4.6? Is all the wiring in my 4.6 all ready to support 4 x 4? What about my computer?

Let me know what you think. :D

By tranny, you mean transfer case, right? And mechanically everything should swap over fine(cv's, front drive shaft, front diff, xcase) but wiring will be a different monster. And youll have to make sure that both trucks are geared the same, or youll have to have the front re geared

Idk if youll have to wire in a 4x4 control module, or if you can wire the xcase straight to fused switches for 2wd, 4hi, and 4low

I can swap anything over from the other ex except the engine. It has almost all the same options as my ex but has 4x4. It has 3.73's like mine, I already checked. And it has the same 17's as mine.

You might be able to remove the shift motor and replace it with a manual shift mechanism of some kind. Might be easier than running all the electronics. I helped DominicanX do this conversion on his 2nd Gen...maybe it would work for you too. I'll find the link to his thread and post it.

Edit:

here it is: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342766&highlight=manual

Would it be easier to just pull the 4.6 out of my ex and drop it in the other?

Probably would be from a financial standpoint that it may be lest costly to swap motors than to swap everything else.

But if you do that you will need to swap all of your mods over as well.

Sounds very interesting, definitely subscribing , if you do part out tell us all the details, i bet you'd sell every piece of that thing

The 5R55W for the 4.6 V8 Explorers has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the 5R55W for the Gen 3 4.0 V6 Explorers.

Damn.

Besides that, I wouldn't bolt up a v8 to a v6 tranny. What you could do is go to the junk yard and get a 4.0 to drop back in it. Assuming the mechanic isn't full of crap and the engine is junk. You could also see if the local junk yard will give you the transfer case for your v8 in trade for the v6? Maybe the whole truck for all the parts you need. Win win for you and the junk yard.

That's what I thought.....

Wring a 4x4 would be quite a bit of work...

Well looks like you have two explorers... One V8 2wd(faster) and a 4x4 4.0 (bad weather)
The SOHC 4.0 are a dime a dozen in scrap yards... Imo I'd buy a 4.0 and have two x's rather than scrapping a good truck

Yeah I agree with will. Have one with a V8 2wd. Then have an off road one, Ive wanted to tthat for quite some time now.

A 3rd gen isn't much for offroad, if he wants a real offroad x he should get a 1st gen. Don't get me wrong, not that 3rd gen can't leave the pavement, just can't do what a 1st gen can. Plus a perfectly running 91 4x4 is probably about the same as the broke down 04 explorer. Find someone selling a old one, and trade the 04. They get an "upgrade" and you get an offroad worthy vehicle. Or Go with my original plan, and do some trading at the junk yard

He isn't all too worried about that, he has stated elsewhere that he really doesn't have any serious trails near him and just wants the comfort of having 4wd is needed.

Exactly. Thanks for the input everyone. Now that I know it'll be a hassle I think I'll just try and make some money off of it. I've always wanted a nice sandrail :D

I don't really get bad weather here.... Worst that'll happen is it'll flood, but I've got a boat and 3 kayaks so I'm good....

Buy more gear for the boat :D

The new stuff that PENN has been sending me over the past two years is some really good quality.
