hello fellow explorer owners, we are here in la paz on the baja and have been having problems with our explorer, a brief history, check engine lite on, every once in a while at a stopc sign she stalls then takes a few crankes to start, kinda a hard start, runs a bit rough then ok for a while, no pattern, just when she wants to act up. took it to ford dealer in la paz for code read and repair in the afternoon yeasterday, they read codes told us something about intake gasket and P0171 and P0174 said that the car needed to be cold for accurate read???? so we left it there, in the morning same thing, told us they did not have gasket so no charge, we had a new fuel filter with us so we asked if they could install, they did and we only had to tip the mecanic 100 pesos, great. as we were standing around with the explorer runing it stalled then we started it and got the usual smelly exaust and a bit of blue smoke, the sun was shinning in the shop so you could see the exaust clearly, it ran rough for a few miniutes then , click, smooth again, the mecanic was reving the engine up and as it reached around 4000 rpm it starts to run rough, like its starving for air, or fuel, said we needed new engine.we got new air and ful filter in it before we took it in any suggestions , only 70,000 miles so the new engine comment nearly sent me over the edge, that was it out the door and here we are in the hotel trying to figure this out ourselves, we are both mecanicly inclined and have toiled with cars for over 30 years so we are not incompetent, new engine ye right how stupid do they think we are, this was the ford dealer not some hick mexician shop, big modern shop,

welcome

I pulled this info from another thread:

Check the fuel pressure. The fuel filter could be clogged or the fuel pump could be going bad. It seems my fuel pump needs replacing. It works, but its just not supplying the volume that it should be. And it causes the too lean on both banks.

Also check vacuum tube that goes to the IAC valve that is famous for developing cracks.

(edit) do a search for 2001 stalling, using this sites search engine. You should find a lot of info.

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the EEC-V section. It sounds like it could have leaking intake manifold gaskets, broken vacuum lines, bad spark plugs or cables. Check the intake manifold gaskets first.

results from posts

so we took the IAC valve off last night and cleaned it with electric cleaner, let it dry out, tried to look for any cracked hoses, loose hoses, etc but could not find any, un hooked the battery and in the morning re assembled the whole thing, hooked up the battery and off we went, fueled up again drove to the west coast for the day, no stalling, no check engine light, all seamed to be running fine, on the return down mex. one she stalled a few times as we took our foot off the accelorater but started right away, so now we will replace the plugs and see if that helps, is the intake manifold gasket hard to replace ourselves, we have tools and are good with cars, ford dealer does not have in stock in la paz but we are heading south to cabo tomorrow, ps our IAC valve does not have the vacume hose on the top as in one of the photos on the post, thanks again for the help as it is running a whole lot better now for only the cost of some cleaner and injector cleaner in the tank, should we get the fuel system flush done?

Having the same issue.

Engine runs rough when first starts then clears out.

I've cleaned the MAH\F IAC and Throttle body. Changed fuel filter

Engine breaks up at 3700

I'm sure the engine does not need to be replaced.

Probably upper and lower intake gasket leaks...

Let me know what you think?
