I finally joined this forum because I have been reading it for years. Some great advice and knowledge!
Now.....I have a 91 Explorer only 120,000 miles. In October 09, I had a rebuilt transmission put in. Recently I think I'm getting electrical/transmission issues. The battery gauge will go a little erratic and my X feels like it wants to stall at stops. It also slugs through the gears.
The tranny guys scanned it and got codes 85, 95. Something to do with canister purge and fuel pump circuit open, fuel at lean limit. Nothing with the tranny.
My mechanic, working on this car for years, noticed it had vacuum leak (bad grommet). He took he it for a ride and said it ran fine for him. I pick it up and it starts doing the same thing. But that's it. Sometimes starting it up, it will run fine (no battery fluctuations/tranny runs through gears fine) but other start ups, it will run like crap.
Last weekend, I decided to look at it myself. I used my multimeter to test the battery and alternator. Shut off 12.65V while running did not get over 13V. So I figured it was the alternator. Had it bench tested at a local auto parts, it was good.
I am taking it back to my mechanic and hopefully it acts up for him. But from this forum there could be a lot of causes from battery cables to fuel pump relay, EEC relay, mass air flow sensor...etc...I just don't know how much more $$$ I can drop into this 91 X.

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the stock 91-94 section. Your charge is way too low while it's running. It should be around 14.7 volts. What is the production date on your 91? It should have the date on the sticker near the driver's door.

You might want to have an alternator rebuilder check it. Do you have any aftermarket high current accessories? How do the battery cables look? You could upgrade to a later model alternator with more current.

When I thought it was the alternator, I did purchase an alternator (Worldwide 95A) and installed it. I currently have my old one which is good. Last summer, I did hard wire my Sirius into my ignition. The battery cables to me don't look good (I'll have to get a pic to post).

Issue Fixed

It turned out to be a corroded negative battery cable to ground. Replaced it and new terminal ends and now runs good....

I did replace my new alternator with my old one and I noticed the the AC clim (where the serpentine belt wraps around) the outer part will stop with a tick sound then less than a minute later it will start rotating again with another tick sound. Is this normal?
