Hi all, i know this sounds stupid, but my explorer was making a funky whiny noise, that stopped when the clutch was depressed, so i figured hmm, throwout bearing. Then one day, the truck would go forward in neutral and with the clutch pushed in i was able to get it home. It would not shift into any other gear. I got a new clutch kit, dropped the transfer and transmission, and while the throwout bearing was kinda iffy, the clutch and pressure plate werent too bad. However, with the transmission in neutral position, turning the input shaft cause the output shaft to turn, shifting into any other gear, (could only force it into 1st postiion, 2nd position, and reverse) and all shafts were totally locked. Then it quit going into any thing. There was not much oil in the tranny, i just bought it a couple months back, i really should have checked that, but what i got out was thick and smelled like clutch. I believe i read somewhere the synchonizers in this transmission are clutch packs. Could someone a little smarter than me please let me know if i need to have the tranny rebuilt, as i suspect, or am i just dumb and missing something. I need to know quick, im with the army in Germany, and we are getting deployment orders right and left. This way, if i leave before the transmission is repaired, my wife can have it towed to a decent shop. At least half the labor is done, it has a brand new clutch now, and all the shop would have to do was throw back up the tranny and transfer and put the driveshafts back on. I would truly appreciate any help, Thanks!

Make sure your clutch hydraulics are 100% ok and fully bled. I've heard slave cyls fail quite often.

Hydrualics are the cheaper side of the clutch system, its a good place to start.

no question is too dumb. If you don't know then you learn by asking!

I can't help you here though. Goodluck

thanks all

Thanks for the responses, well i ended up taking it to a tranny shop, and it was a frozen needle bearing that caused the tranny to lunch, but im gonna get a new slave cylinder and bolt that on as well. Just hoping the rebuild wont cost tooo much, lol
see ya, Dave
