I have been cracking open my head trying to figure out what will probably be an easy question to answer for someone in this forum. I saw one time a guy with his head unit up on the left pillar (above steering wheel) he said he remote wired it. he found a way to put the body of the radio somewhere and his head unit up there and still work it with his remote. I have no idea how the hell he did that and he of course did not post how either. I happened to see it on a pic on Cardomain. I am trying to begin a project where I put a screen on the dashboard, but I still want use of my radio. (just love that AM station) can anyone please post pics or at least a simple answer to what now has me digging a hole in my head while I look at this guys car.

Easy way to look at it is just extending all the wires from the face to the deck (I'm assuming that's what you are talking about) I've seen it done before and when I asked folks about it they often reccommended soldering with the use of ribbon cable. I guess this is much easier than extending every single wire and such.

If you want a screen in your dash, why not flush it in where the factory deck resides, then relocate your aftermarket source either where the HVAC controls are or fab a place for it in the center console? Remote mounting the face of a deck could be a PITA I'd guess depending on the deck, and your electrical/fab skills.

thanks for replying davesexplorer. The thing about moving my radio is that I still want to keep my ac controls and my ac ducts and also my center computer. this is why simply relocating the face and still be able to have a rasdio plus the monitor is best for me

pay up and i'll put teh whole unit in your overhead console or center console

the remote face thing is way mor work than its worth though.

i've been itching to do one in the overhead console...

here is a picture of my overhead console right now just for a really unrelated example of what it might look like or something.

How about putting the screen in the stock radio location and getting one of those hidden stereo systems like they use in classic cars when they don't want to cut the dash or want a stock look. they have a headunit you hide (inside the dash, under the seat, ect.) and the system is run by a remote you could attach to your dash like you want. I think the name of the company that makes them is Hidden Audio but I imagine more places make them. It seems easier than what you want to do.

a guy i know from the sport trac web site did it with his truck. said it dident take him that long. seems like alot of work to me though.

wow that looks like that ergonomically blows lol, nice fab work though.

Did you think about your center console? Under your opening top? There's enough room in there for a CD changer - I'd assume enough for a deck too..
Or glovebox? (key with that would be remote control and IR reciever somewhere convenient.

And I'll give you one more holy **** on that dash expo! wow

i need to snap a new picture now. it no longer looks like hell.

How do you put a cd in that one?

danman

That's just the face, the actual CD player unit is stashed somewhere else. Kind of like a remote control - but it's the whole fricken face!

so why not just put the face in there and use a remote?

better yet, with most dvd players they will display a static screen that shows cd info. if you want to remote mount something, remote mount one of those and control it with the on lcd screen prompts...

i dont know....not my truck lol

just showing him what he wanted to see. i think it was because he wanted to be able to change stations and such without opening the glove box. but im not sure

yeah, that is why that guy did it.

i'm just saying there are much better ways of accomplishing most of the same tasks

96limited x got it right on the money. that whole pic with the "ergonomically challenged" HU on the pilla is exactly what I am looking for. I have a remote and I only listen to about 5 stations. and like I said I would use the carputer for all cd/dvd needs. the trick is now how the hell do I remote wire the face to the HU so that they can both work and they are far apart from each other at the same time. can I just solder the points where the faceplate is attached to the HU?

yep, it really is that simple. probably easier with a ribbon like was said above, but if you are a good solderer detail wise you can do it easy.

thats a weird set up .. cool but weird

damn fellas, I knew I could count on you thanks expo5.0 you finally put my mind at ease. I am getting the money togethet to come out swinging this summer and make you guys proud. trust me, you will get tired of the pics I will put up. all of you are great keep up the good work
