i know removing the sway bar will give me better flex but....

if i remove the sway bar is it going to hurt my handling? is it going to hurt my gas mileage? is it going to hurt my power(what little there is)?

Removing the sway bar won't effect power or mpg. It just limits side to side sway, or body roll.
 






yeah took mine off best thing i could have done for 4x4ing no adverseeffects in terms of power or mpg not that mutch of a change on road to just a bit more roll but not that bad
 






I have no idea why someone would want to remove their swar bar on an explorer. You do know explorers are famous for flipping right? I believe they are the second most prone behind the iszuzu trooper. My god man put the thing back on! Taking your sway bar off your explorer just doesnt make much sence. While your at it, take the rear brakes off and the windshield wipers.
 






Removing the rear one is fine, ive had mine off for years. I would not recommend removing the front one however. I had my fronts off for like a day and put them back on. Way to much body roll and instablility on the street.
 






What do you gain by removing the rear bar? The axle is solid... so how do you get more flex?

both of mine are removed. its not that bad, jsut dont drive it like its a sports car :o

Yeah. Because flipping a truck never has anything to do with THE DRIVER :rolleyes:.

Which means you:

- Have never been off road.
- Have never thought about flex.
- Don't realize flex helps keep tires on the ground over uneven terrain and that is far safer (under those conditions) than lifting tires.


Yes it will affect handling, as will different tires, lifting, lowering, horsepower mods and so on, but any driver who can't be bothered to learn how a vehicle handles and drive in a manner appropriate that vehicle shouldn't be behind the wheel in the first place.

Personally, I only connect my rear swaybar if I plan to be driving on the freeway. Otherwise it's off.

I never connect my rear sway bar anymore. It's back there, but just dead weight with no end links. Even towing an enclosed trailer it is fine. If I were hauling 4 people with gear AND towing a trailer on the highway a lot, I might connect it.
I've run for weeks/months without the front swaybar on my sport trac and my old ranger. If you learn how to drive it you will be fine, just be smooth on streering inputs. I've cornered hard at 60+ and bottomed out one side, while the other is topped out, no problems, I was just smooth so the weight wasn't shifted fast.
And sure explorer are infamous for flipping, there are a ton of them out there, with wobbly passenger tires for stock. Plus most of them are driven by soccer moms who don't know how to properly react to unusual situations (ie driving off the shoulder and jerking the truck back to the road)...
A haven't disconnected the sway bars on my 4 door Explorer, never had it offroad. Although I did try to flex it in a ditch and it was PATHETIC.
Disconnecting them offroad makes a WORLD of difference. The suspension moves more freely resulting in a much smooth ride and better traction.
