i mailed crutchfield about a wire harness and dash kit this is what he wrote back.......................
The original Ford factory system for your vehicle has an external power
amplifier behind the trimpanel below the right rear window. We have a wiring
harness that will bypass that amp and connect your speakers directly to your
new receiver. Your new receiver probably has about the same power as the
factory amplifier, so you'll get great results if you choose this option.

If you really like the sound of the factory amplifier, we also have two OEM
integration adapters available that will allow you to plug the new receiver
into your existing amp. There is an extra charge for the integration
adapters.

The Scosche model is item number 1421bfdk5 and it requires some adjustment
to tune it for your Ford sound system.

The other adapter we carry is from Sound Gate, item number 55303frd2, and
this adapter is pre-tuned for your Ford factory system so it doesn't require
any adjustment.

In answer to your question about installation accessories for your '92

your new equipment in stock. Here's the list:

~~~i didn't think i even had an external amp all i want is the harness that goes from the back of the deck unit to the factory wires, is this bypass thing the same deal or what?
thanx!!
Just curious, are you putting in a new deck and keeping everything else stock?????
and just looking for a harness???
I put in a new deck & got an adapter harness that goes from the new deck to the factory wire harness. (Kept everything else stock) It came from Circiut City and it was about $15. (w/wiring diagram too)
GOOD LUCK!!!!
From what I've seen all the 1992 Explorers have at least 1 amp. You will have a 2nd amp if you have the factory sub woofer. It sounds like your trying to change your head unit. If so I would use the bypass harness. Your head unit will have close to the same power as the factory amp. If the adapter to keep your factory amp was cheap then I would say go for it.. but at $50+ its not worth it. Once you have your new head unit in you can continue upgrading your system without throwing anything away. The new head unit should give you the extra features (or a working system) but not much better sound quality. The next step is the change your speakers.. then add an amp. The next upgrade would be to add a sub (using something like a stealth box). If you think ahead you can get an amp to run your main speakers and your sub or get a smaller amp to run your main speakers and get another amp to run your sub when your ready for it. It usually comes down to how much money do you have to spend.. and what you want the end result to be. The $11 is worth it.. without it you must either run new wires to all the speakers or try to figure out which wires to cut and splice to bypass the amp which I don't think is worth the headache.
Here's the deal. For a new head unit, go with Crutchfield's install kits, you get a free installation guide, etc. and it is 1/2 the price of circuit city kits.
When you order from crutchfiled, get the following items for a new head unit installation.
1) DIN TOOLS - used to pull out old radio
2) TRIM PLATE - Black parallelogram shaped metal plate.
3) MOUNTING BRACKET W/3 SCREWS - Shiny Steel bracket. Rectangular, with holes for 3 screws
4) WIRING HARNESS - This is in two pieces. One set has eight wires. These are the speaker wires. Small Square end. Other Piece is a flat rectangular connector. This one is power, ground, etc.
5) AMPLIFIER BYPASS - As I remember, 2 plastic connectors with four wires in between.
For the amplifier bypass - There are 3 choices. The two expensive models allow you to use the stock ford amplifier (I didn't, it's a piece of junk). The free one Crutchfield is offering you (I chose this) completely bypasses the stock ford amp. If you have a head unit with decent power (I do), go with this.
Hope this helps.
