Hey guys,

I just purchased 2 sets of these speakers for my 04 Explorer Eddie Bauer with the DVD player.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8301.html

I have been calling around and asking questions to see what I need to install these. I will be keeping the stock head unit. Is that a good or bad idea? If I keep the stock headunit, do I need a harness to mount just the speakers to the car? Is this install hard?

What is in all needed to take off the old speakers. I want to do this myself.

Thanks,
Mike

when i put speakers on my ex, i just clipped off the plug and saudered (sp?) the wires to the speakers.

I don't think speakers will effect the head unit at all. I clipped the factory connection off and crimped on some female connectors that matched the speakers.

I talked to a sales guy at cardomain.com about a wiring harness for my speakers but he couldn't find one anywhere. I wound up getting my front set installed by Best Buy. The guy there just tapped the wires to connect the speakers and never removed the plug so if I want, I can put the old speakers back on. I did the same thing myself for the rear speakers. The only tricky thing is that you may need to put a voltmeter across the wires to determine positive and negative before connecting the speakers. The new speakers should have positive and negative marked on them already.

Also, make sure the wires (or crossover is you have one) don't get in the way of the windows going up and down. I taped the crossover to the inner wall of the door with double-sided tape and I taped the dangling wire against that inner wall with duct tape.
