I have alot of problems with my 99 Ford explorer. It has a 4.0 v6 and it is making tapping noises. I was told it was my lifters. My check engine light is also on. I have worked really hard to pay for this car and don't want to loose it. I love my truck. Can someone help me out. p.s. I don't make alot of money and right now this my only car:):exporange

Go to the auto parts store and have them read the trouble codes, then post back up. Also, I have never heard of a 5.0 V6, so double check that too. See if maybe it is a 4.0 SOHC.
Best Wishes.

Lol, sorry, I meant to say 4.0 v6

That i do not know

they deff. have 4.0 v6. thats what i own. a 99 ford xlt. ohv. 4.0 v6.

Cool, but back to my question. How do you fix lifter noises without going into the engine, and if I have to where do I go to get it fixed without spending $1700? Please help me out:exp:

first let's make sure t is a lifter tick.

does it tick all the time? ticks at an idle?

only ticks under load, when driving?

it ticks all the time. You can hear the noise in the upper part of the engine. Pepboys is the place that told me it was my lifters.

We still need to know if it is an overhead cam, or an overhead valve engine. An OHC engine does not have lifters

I'm thinking EGR valve or header gasket.

my EGR valve ticks at certain time when running under load. doesn't do it all the time, but it will come and go with the situation I'm driving under.

quic starts and stops ( meaning going to the store and shutting the truck off for five minutes)

I'm going to find out exactly what kind of engine I have then I will post it. Thanks everyone

Just look at the top of the engine. It will say either OHC, or if will say 4.0 EFI if it is an OHV engine. If it is an OHV engine, I rather doubt you have bad lifters, mors likely worn rocker arms and pushrods. I just went through this with my 96 4.0 OHV

ok cool, It is night where I am and have no light. I will look in the morning.

Did you let the truck sit for a little while? If so just run the motor for a little bit and you should be good.

The noise could be your valves, at least I think our explorers have hydraulic valves right?

how's your oil level? sounds pretty obvious, but you never know until you have checked. if your oil is low, you engine can make a ticking noise until it gets warm and pressure starts to build. i would check that first. then, i would check the EGR.
