Hello,

I have a 98 Explorer xlt 5.0 AWD 4R70W transmission ( U ) and I am having trouble replacing the neutral safety switch/range selector on the transmission.

Ive been having to jiggle the gear shift lever every so often to get my car to start for the past month or so and finally that stopped working. So I wedged something inbetween the linkage and sensor on the transmission to take the extra play out of it, which allowed me to get it to start. I then went out and got a aftermarket replacement from a parts chain and replaced the old one with it.

Which made it so my reverse lights ( the white ones in the back ) no longer come on when in reverse as well as no longer trigger the starter solenoid when turning the key. I noticed that it only has 11 pins instead of the 12 the old one had. But I saw a post on here that says all aftermarket suppliers as well as ford only supply the 11 pin version now. So my first question is why does the old switch work the reverse lights and trigger the starter solenoid just fine with 12 pins and the 11 pin aftermarket one does neither. I know there is some adjusting to be done to get it to crank over when in park etc but I have bigger problems when the aftermarket one is connected the solenoid no longer clicks. So I need to figure out what is going on before I need to worry about lining up everything just right.

My next question is when lining up the new switch with the tranmission gear selector shaft, I assume that when the line in the white plastic ring, lines up with the line on the black housing denoting neutral, the transmission should be in neutral as well? Or would it be park?

I would apprieciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks
