Well on my initial check coasting downhill in nuetral no noise was heard.

I also discovered that my recently installed t-case was not staying locked in 2H. So I am thinking that it quite possibly could be a bad t-case. I have sent an nasty email off to the company I purchased the t-case from. That was the 2nd t-case they sent to me. It was shifting rough when I bench tested it but figured it just needed fluid and would shift better when installed.

*cough* atlas II *cough* excuse me, sorry, i think i am catching a cold

I had a problem that was a lot like that. Only made noise at certain speeds under power. When I checked my u joints they looked and felt fine but upon closer inspection (taking them apart) they were just ground up metal inside. You might have more going on by the sound of it but just a thought.

Well $2,000 is just too expensive for a t-case. I can't justify that at all.

I love my dime a dozen electric shift BW 1354's.....

I can rebuild the shift actuator to make it work like new, so whats all the hype about having a manual shift (they do have a lsightly lower low range if I remember right, but big whoop)

I can get the electric shift T cases all day long for about $100 here in Denver, last I checked.........

Well if the noise is not there when you are in N then it is definatley a rotating mass in the drivetrain, IE T case, Tranny, or driveshafts.

Get under there and triple check your motor and tranny mounts, check the U joints and the slip yoke on that rear driveshaft real good, triple check the fluid level in the t case, check all your shift linkage under there and make sure its not something stupid like the shift arm hitting the tranny hump or something.........

I know a guy (Brett) is selling a manual shift 1354 right now! (hehehe)

Are you sure you cant get that Atlas II? after 3-4 of these suckers you would paid for it already! (dont worry it will be a long time before I can get the Atlas II I want too....house first, I keep telling myself.........

Well I will have to wait and see. We have some weird stuff going on right now and we may get a 2002 Jeep Cherokee and a house gifted to us. If this happens then I will be getting an Atlas2 among other things since I won't be dishing out 1000 a month on rent.

I wont hold my breath until the keys to the house and car is put in my hands.

My wife is working with a traveling multi-millionaire who has become real good friends with my wife and supposedly she has had her father, husband and a woman she cared for die in the past 2 years and left her more money than can be counted. She has recently moved into the same building as Oprah Winfrey in Chicago and has all furnishings from a 7 bedroom house plus 2 cars in storage in Minn. She still works so she doesn't go crazy. She is up here for another 6 weeks and just had her 2door BMW shipped up here so she could stop driving rental cars. I crapped when I saw it. She is now looking for houses to buy up here and is giving my wife one of them. I don't know. I'm not holding my breath.

Before you drive it much longer,

Pull the starter and check the flywheel bolts. Pull one nut off and feel for an elongated hole.

Well I haven't really done anything with this and now the noise sounds like a helicopter. What is the point of this with the flywheel. Is this going to be a PITA to do.

I am going to put it up on jackstands today and let the wheels turn and see if I can visually see anything and find out exactly where the noise is coming from.

Found it!!!

Well I put the Ex up on all fours and ran the wheels and wouldn't you know it not the tranny at all. Thank god!!

It turned out to be the rear pinion. It appears as though the pinion bolt has loosened. So I am going to remove the pinion and take a look at the shaft and if ok I will put it back in retorque the nut and locktite the SOB.

Glad to hear you found the problem.

Well I hope that it isn't all tore up! I read an old thread on this same problem so I know what to look for. But it said retighten nut to 250lbs. That just seems like tooo much! I've never seen a torque wrench that reads that high.

Anyone have anyidea of how tight to torque the pinion nut?

I don't want to have to replace the crush sleeve so I will be careful when taking any excess backlash play out.
