I have a '95 Explorer XLT, it's got a 4.0L in it, it's not a bad ride, except for these things:

1) uni-bearing in the front passenger is going, very loud and annoying.

2) Tranny is going, slowly but surely.

3) The engine is pretty rough, and has trouble starting and idling on inclines.

My problem is, should I keep this vehicle, or should I ditch it? It runs decent, despite its condition, and it's my daily driver. I baby her a bit.. but I think it may be time to get rid of it.

The body is immaculate, some scratches on the clearcoat here and there, from driving it around on my land (very overgrown) and the interior is very nice as well. My question is this, with 141k miles, do you think I should sell it and try to find something else, or keep it and put a little money into it?

Any opinions would be appreciated. :/

Also, I work in a Ford shop, and have the ability to fix these things probably, just trying to see if you guys think it's worth it. This is my first Explorer, and I'm sure many of you have had many more than me, and have had them much longer. Like I said, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! :D

Me????????

I would take the opportunity to do a refresh on the vehicle and then sell it if you would like a new vehicle, or keep it and drive it.

The OHV engine is a strong engine which can easily see 200k if not much more............

Due a search for the issues you listed and they may all be easily corrected. If not the subjects have been discussed in detail before..........

Welcome to the site there's a huge depth and archive of information tucked away in here. If ya can't find what you need ask and folks will offer assistance.

It all depends on how much you paid for it and how much you'll get for it. Unfortunately the resale value on our trucks isn't great right now cause of the current prices of crude oil and the lack of gas processing facilities. The tranny is a given but if you take care of it by doing frequent transmission services ie filter change, flush, etc it should last.

depending on hobbies, why not get a new vehicle for a dd and get evil on the x you got now... i mean use this as an excuse to get crazy and build somthing to be proud of..if you are mechanically inclined, and if you are going to replace things yourself up grade a little. alot of projects start becuase of one little problem, mine started when the tranny went out, so of coarse stronger tranny, stronger moter, bigger tires, bigger axles... you get my drift...

thats just my .02

get a station wagon ;) an AWD station wagon.. yes.. let the efficient utilitarian within u blossom.. ahaha!

Pickup a wrecked one and swap the drivetrain.

Since you work in a ford shop, I would rebuild what you have, for two reasons
You won't get s**t for it this way
You'll know what you have when you are finished.

I totally agree with Jtsmith. The 4.0L is a really solid, stump-puller engine and the threads on this forum seem to verify that it is one of the most trouble free ever. You already said that you have a great looking body, so that puts you ahead. So if you work on the few minor issues, you'll end up with a truly solid and dependable vehicle that you KNOW will serve you well for a long time. And without additional car payments. Also, as was mentioned before, you are in a perfect position to add a few options that will make your ride uniquely yours.
