I have my eye on two explorers that a I like but Im not sure which one will be the better buy. Which one would you get and why?
Thanks
1996 XLT V8 AWD automatic with 104,000 miles The truck is clean and seem to be well mantained. The price is $6,800.00

OR
1997 XLT V6 SOHC engine 4WD with 65,000 miles The truck is clean and seem to be well mantained. The price is $9,700.00.

Which one is the better deal? I don't do much off roading and I might tow maybe 1 to 3 times in a year.

Get the V-8..those 97 V-6 SOHC are the engines that had major troubles

If you're going to tow, go for the V8. And Travis is right: stay away from the 97 SOHCs. Also, the Explorer is one vehicle where higher mileage is actually a plus. At 104,000, most of the major common problems will most likely have already occured and been fixed. Make sure that you get maintenance records, if you can, and a Carfax report.

Oh, and be sure to thank Firestone for killing our resale values. A 96 V8 for $6800?? Geez, I'd hate to think what mine is worth now.

peace

Mike

i think the V-8 is the much better choice. the other posts make very good points, and i agree with them.

Mike- i bought my 92XLT 4X4 last Nov. for $3200

That is a good deal on the V8 model. I would love to have AWD on mine. Don't let the miles worry you, the 302 is good for at least 300,000 miles. I know from experience.

V8

I would go for the V8, it's perfect for what you intend to use it for.

I second what everyone has said so far. And also the V8's transmission is very strong compared to the one in the V6's so that's one less thing to worry about.

i chant v-8 v-8 v-8!

Absolutley get the V8. The first year SOHC engines were problem prone. The V8 also has a better transmission. You will really like the AWD too.

Rock, Where do you live? I can't believe the prices your quoting for these explos. So I've got a sohc and everyone is saying go v8 now my cars a piece of #%^&*. I looked on yahoo and I can't find anything near those prices. Just bitter..
