I now understand axle wrap!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking my ubolts possibly werent' tight enough.

That's why my bent also! Now, i check them about once a week when i'm at the house.

Also, i bought some shock mounts that weld to the axle. Cory welded them on when he build my front end, but the PS is off because of the sway bar mount. If no one has ever noticed, go out and look at that mount. The PS mount is closer to the pumpkin then the DS is. So maybe one day i can cut those off and redo them cause mine sways to much in the rear with the shocks so close to the center.

To what lbs per foot are you guys tightening the ubolts to??

I have never used a torque wrench on those suckers but I can tell you they are 3' long breaker bar tight....

Careful though if you go too tight you will stretch the u bolts and the threads.........

Just make sure they are tight ass tight and check them after you go flex it out/drive it for a while...

I went to Moab soon after doing my new front suspension and when I came back my radius arm nuts were FINGER TIGHT :)

I would guess 180 ft lbs if I had too....between 180 and 200 is what mine are probably at. Tight.

I've got to keep an eye on my radius arm bolts becuse they come loose regularly.

You could use two nuts and "jam" them against each other to prevent this on RAs or u-bolts.

which radius arm bolts are you talking about? the ones mounting it to the axle?

I'm getting all these suckers pretty tight... on some I have used treadlock.... most have washers too so they won't get loose all by themself... but you never know...

Little update. Got the spring perches welded on. Cranked the ubolts to 150 ft/lbs. So hopefully this will cure my axle wrap. Now for the ebrake and adjusting the master cylinder for the new rear disc brakes. I got a ebrake cable from a '95 but it's to short??? Still not 100% sure on how to adjust for the new rear disc brakes.

PV,

I just converted to disks and I didn't have to adjust anything. Stopping power is impressiv

Is the 95 ebrake cable from a 4dr? I haven't gotten around to hooking up mine yet.

CHH777: I haven't adjusted mine either and it brakes better than ever but from what the other big dawgs have said, we will need to adjust them otherwise we will be wearing down the front brakes. As for now mine are just fine.

It's suppose to be from a 4 door but it's to short and I'm not sure if it will work at all. I remember readind somewhere that we can use one from and extended cab ranger??? I may take it to a brake place and see what the say. Maybe something really easy I'm just not grasping???

OK... here's what I noticed so far:
brakes are fine so far - I have not adjusted anything yet;
e-brake cables are too long... I need e-brake as my truck has manual tranny... I have installed rear end out of a 4door "X" into my Sport... that's probably why tese cables are too long?????? perhaps "Sport" cables would work???

and what exactly has to be done to adjust these brakes???

For ebrake cables guys just go get some galvanized cable (if you are too short), some cable clamps, and a turnbuckle. You'll have an adjustable ebrake cable for under $5. Mines been that way over a year.

THERE is a plunger that comes out of the brake booster and activates the master cylinder.

This plunger is adjustable, the depth of it.

If you adjust it out (2 wrenches, 10 or 12mm if I rememver right)

Plunger out from the booster (more into master) = rear biast

Plunger in (more out of master) = front biast

PLaan to play with this thing for a few hours. :)

I would have all front, then go adjust again, tehn be all rear, then all front, etc etc took about 5 tries.

Each time you simnply unbolt eh master cyl from its studs, adjust the plunger, re-install.

I have been driving my BII with rear discs for about 3 years like this, great braking, even with the 19' Bayliner or holding a hill in Moab.
HOWEVER what I really need to do is install a new brake booster (mine has 251K miles on it now) and a 95 Explorer 4 wheel disc master cylinder.

Disc brakes get a different type of hydraulic pressure then drums from what I understand, without swapping the master it will never be exactly right.

Extended cab Ranger brake cables work well if you need longer, if you need shorter go get a cable calmp from ACE and tie the two together.....(one form the cab, ones going to rear axle).....
my BII is different from all the Explorer's, I had to weld an Explorer bracket to my floor pan using low heat and careful not to burn the carpet. :)
