When I replaced my clutch, I put 85w in my 94's manual tranny. I think I did check Chiltons on the fluid type

Now I'm reading it should have been Mecron ATF

What the verdict? Should I get that stuff out of there and replace it with Mercon?

If so, I guess? just drain it and refill it?

The Mazda 5 speed you have gets ATF.
Get the gear lube out of there and fill with ATF.........

You may consider doing this twice, drive it for a while with the ATF in there, then drain, then re-fill

Just checked my Haynes and they refer to both as well. The Mercon ATF is used on the Mazda tranny and 80W gear lube in the Mitsubishi tranny. Does anyone know on what explorers/rangers you might find a Mitsubishi tranny?

The Mitsu's were interspersed w/the Mazda's. Only way to know which you had was to check the code on the VIN or check tags on the tranny...

the mazda has an intragal bell housing and the mitsushitty has a seperate bell housing....also the mitsu. has an external slave...i think the mitsu was only used on rangers with the desiel 4banger....im pretty sure the all the x's had the mazda....if you look at your vin# you should have a 5 after the X for the engine code

for "hahas", I was passing a Ford Dealership and I stopped in and asked how which fluid to use...

They didn't know..... they said "to stop at a transmission place"

Customer service is going to "hell in a handbasket" everywhere!

The Mitzy's were used from 1985-1992. They were put behind the 2.9L V-6's only in the Bronco IIs, Rangers and Explorers. It is a fully synchronized 5-Speed manual transmission. It has a stamped metal pan on the bottom much like an automatic transmission and the main case is tapered toward the rear. I had 209,000 miles on my 88 Ranger S/C 4X4 when I sold it. I never had a problem with the tranny. I did have to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing twice due to normal wear and tear. The slave cylinder never failed on it.
