91 2door sport
Hey everybody or anybody that can help me, I just bought a '91 2 door sport 4x4 and its got some miles on it, SERIOUS MILES. All that i can tell has been done to it is a 2 inch body lift. I've changed the oil and plugs, serviced the tranny as far as fluid and filtration goes, but i'm having serious problems. Second gear just dropped out of it, I'm having to rev up to 3,500 and then drop the throttle to get it to shift into 3rd. I need to know if anyone knows how to fix this, or if there's a standard tranny conversion possible for a '91, or even how much a used tranny might run me. Even if you could tell me how to find this info I would greatly appreciate it.

4x4 swap can be done with junkyard parts. Best bet is to find a reputable tranny shop in your neighborhood. Don't go on EBay, and be especially aware of a shop called transmissions4x4 if you do go to ebay.

I mean 5 spd swap

trans problems

you are going to need a new transmission for sure. If i am correct, you probably started having problems after you changed the transmission fluid.

it is weird, but believe it or not, sometimes you have a tranny that you think is working fine, you change the fluid, and then it starts acting up. It is because the old fluid has, for lack of better words, "thickened" with use, so it has more of oil type characteristic to it than fresh tranny fluid.

if you are needing a quick fix to get around, drain a quart or two of your tranny fluid, and then put 1 or two quarts of motor oil in it, and it might help the shifting, but is just a delay on it going out permanently.

We race off road, and we always put 1 quart of motor oil in all of our transmissions, it helps keep the parts lubricated, because tranny fluid has almost no lubrication qualitites to it. a quart of motor oil will actually prolong the life of you tranny, new or used.

But don't go filling the whole thing with motor oil, it will create too much foam and your tranny wont work right, but one quart helps the life of it. If it is really bad as in your case and the tranny is on its last leg, you can put two quarts of oil, and it will probably work for a liitle bit longer.
