Why not? I don't get it. Explorers have been the BEST SELLING SUV many years in a row. Why doesn't the market acknowledge this. There is a conversion kit for a Toyota Tacoma, and I know d@#n well there's been more explorers sold than them.
Done with my soap box.

The '01 ST would be just like the 95-01 Xs right? Without locking hubs right?

That's right. I want to be able to lock my hubs when four wheeling or any other time I want to. Then when unlocked, my wheel spin free. Without adding extra wear and tear on the axles, CV joints, etc.

Upgrade to a D30...or even better, D44

But don't Tacomas come with locking hubs? I don't think they use a live hub like the '95+ Xs use.

I can't believe that any aftermarket company makes a kit, for any vehicle, to convert them from live hub to locking hub, but I might be wrong about that. Do you know of a kit, for any vehicle, that accomplishes this?

you ever seen the old jeeps that had live hubs.... they make conversions for them to go manual hubs.... just find a D35 axle hub conversion and it should be adaptable.

The reason there aren't locking hubs is because the xfer case is never really in 2WD. There is always a portion of the power being applied to the front wheels, so the driveline is permanantly bolted to the front wheels. Those of us with Gen II and up Explorers are stuck with that setup unless we do some major modifications. The closest you can get is the 'brown wire mod', which disables the control trac clutch in the xfer case, allowing the vehicle to operate in 2WD. However, the drivetrain is still rotating because all the components are bolted to each other. To do a hub conversion you would most likely need to replace the complete hub assembly (since the bearing is integral to it) and both half shafts, since they are splined to the hubs.

It'd be great to have a manual hub conversion kit made for us.

This is what you would need to do: Get a 1354 or a 4404 selectable 4wd transfercase. Then get auto hubs and axles from a 98-99 ranger, also known as PVH. There is a company in South America that makes manual conversions for those hubs and I believe Superlift is selling them here.
With the Ranger axles and hubs, the manual hub conversion, and the selectable transfercase, you would have what you are after.

Until 2000 or there about the Tacoma used a spindle and serviceable wheel bearing assembly similar to a solid axle. The were available with a drive flange, an auto hub or a manual hub. I can't remember when they did it, but all new Tacos and Tundras (4runners and Freelanders) use a live hub and are no longer available with the option of a locking hub.

Just for reference, all IFS Nissan 4wds (prior to 99), All IFS Suzikis and Geos and all pre Ranger Mazdas used a similar design hub/bearing design as the IFS Toyotas.

There is no company offering a conversion kit to put manual hubs on any "live" hub IFS vehicle, nor would it be logicial/praticle. Like the statistics show, only 1% of the 4wd vehicles sold in America are used "offroad." The demand for parts (such as a hub conversion) is so small it goes unoticed or ignored by companies looking to capalitize on the SUV market.

UMMMM>>>NO..the sport trac uses a ranger t-case..so the is NOT a AUTO4x4 option...it's just like a ranger @WD 4X4 4x4 low..so when in 2wd he is actually in 2wd no power to the front..

(i had a 01 st)

yeah, i read up on that and it seems the PVH are very prone to failure because everyone wants to convert to our "hubs" since the explorer and newest ranger ones are "hubless" so in theory it doesnt seem like we will be able to convert to manual hubs short of throwing in a D30 or D44. and yes, '01+ Explorers use the 1354 case, most of them being electric other then the FX4's that you can still get a manual 1354 in.

The Rangers with the PVH front end uses a true 2wd, 4wd-HI, 4wd-Low t-case. That is the unit you would need to swap into the Explorer, in place of the Control trac AWD unit.

The PVH units are prone to failure, that is where the manual hubs from South America come in. They gut the PVH units and replace the "prone to fail" vacuum parts with mechanical manual lockouts.

this is what im saying!!!! SPORT TRAC'S DO NOT USE CONTROL TRAC they use RANGER t-cases..so when it's in 2wd there is NO power to the front

the parts still turn even though no power is applied. as long as the tires are on the ground, the front end will spin.
