Has anyone ever taken all of the A/C components out of their Explorer? My compressor went out about a year ago, and I have no plans to fix the problem. I wouldn't mind having all that precious extra space under the hood. Any input? Is there anything that I might take out that someone can use? Obviously not the compressor.

Thanks
Curt

You can probably goto ford and just get a pulley to go in the place of the A\C compressor on the motor, I'm not sure how what they did for vehicles that didn't come equipped with a\c but it should be easy to swap it out.

For ones that didn't have AC I don't think there was any pulley or anything there at all. It just skipped it all together but you'll need a shorter belt. There should be diagram of the belt arrangement with and without AC.

My compressor also died, just bought the non-A/C belt, but never removed the components. I was planning on it, but it's real involved. The lady at the store was asking if I was sure about non-A/C. I told her the compressor died so I was bypassing it. She went off about how a shorter belt wouldn't work and blah blah. It did, like I knew it would.

Wow, the girl I work with, would have said "whats ac?" There are some cars that wont work without the ac. I know a guy came into work with a t-bird (mid 90s with the 3.8) apparently he had someone evacuate all the refrigerant out, but they didnt replace it with oil, and somehow the ac kicked on, burnt the bearings and fried the clutch, snapped the belt. All in the parking lot at work. I was unforunately nice enough to replace his belt. There was no way I could bypass the ac compressor. So I rigged the belt on, sprayed a lot of pb blaster on the compressor clutch as the car ran, and told him to head right home... You dont have time to pay me, just go home. So yeah, there are some cars that dont have that alternate belt pattern.

That is what I did when the compressor lock up on me about 10 miles from home. I was driving down the freeway and smelled burning rubber. Thank god it got me home. I really thank Ford for that easy fix. Shorter belt and you on you way. I just thought that since I won't be fixing it I may tear it out.

great idea! I just had a compressor crap out on me and can't afford the compresor kit. I have been trying to figure out how to get back on the road but it never occured to me to buy a non-AC belt. THanks

I NEED MY AC! There's no way in hell I'd live without it. I'd rather not drive if the car I had didn't have AC.
