I have been discovering a few strange engine symptoms since i recently bought my explorer. When i revv it past 3000 rpms and let it return to idle it nearly stalls but then rebounds. Also, the power steering is tough to turn unless you give it some gas, and then it is fine. As far as i know the IAC valve contributes to both of these situations.

Does this sound correct?

not yet, i think ill grab one at the junkyard and clean that one so that if i ruin it somehow i still have a semi working part to tide me over.

it's pretty simple to clean, I think I used carb cleaner and some q-tips, oven cleaner would probably work well too. Not much to screw up. I reused my old gaskets. Take you literally 30 seconds to remove.

Just cleaned it and took it for a little test drive. It seems better now, and the power steering is smooth as well. Its not perfect and i will probably replace it someday but its great for now! I couldnt believe how much gunk was in there!

Good stuff dude, glad you got it sorted out.

The reason your power steering was rough was that as you idle dropped to near zero the pump was not providing power steering assist. This part will work for a while after you clean it but if you find yourself cleaning it more than a few times you should replace it.
