As I understand it, ain't nothing gonna give you traction on ice.

4x4 can't hurt, but the only thing to do is take it slow, steer easy, and brake early

appreciate it

On ICE get chains or get off the road

Ice- I would use chains or stay home. If you must 2wd may work better than 4wd since on ice all wheels have the same amount of traction- NONE- with power applied they will all spin, and you have no control. In two wheel drive the two rear wheels will have the same amount of traction and will spin, but the fronts will act like anchors (well sort of..) and keep the vehicle on the road- if you go SLOW. When you think you are going slow enough - slow down even more you cant go too slow because your stopping distance has increased dramatically.

Stay Safe and Good Luck.

Good Luck

haha, not to be mean or nothing but i just love it when the southern US gets an inch of snow and all chaos prevails down there :D come up here and play in the 36 inches weve had the past week. again, no offense, just find it funny!

Let's think about this for a minute, on ice would you rather have two wheels pulling or four!!!!!!!!!
I kinda like four. duhhhhh
You have to remember that when it comes to stopping your brakes are only as good as your tires. If they are bald you aren't going to stop or go well on ice or snow.

4wd may help prevent the wheels from spinning but will not prevent them from sliding. Ice is ice... it doesnt matter if you have 2wd, 4wd or 10wd.

The most important advice I can give is that a rolling wheel steers on ice, and a sliding wheel does not.....If the front wheels lock up, and you have no steering, lay off the brake.

welp we are getting that storm in NY there calling for 6-10" of snow!!!! i cant wait.. i will take some snow pics with me truck!!!

Well, if you gotta ask....

Use four wheel drive on ice. Don't use brakes. Use gears to slow truck. Or just stay home.

You obviously haven't driven on much ice. With less than 3" of snow your vehicle weight melts the snow and you are driving on wet pavement, not much different than heavy rain. Once the snow gets deep enough you don't reach pavement, 60" is pretty much the same as 6". If you have the clearance and wide enough tires, you can drive in it. Your tire lugs will bite.

Put your vehicle on 3/16 of glare ice, and you are in for a BIG surprise. You have the same traction as the special rigs used for performance driving instruction - NONE. I've had the 'fun' of hitting the brakes at 15MPH and sliding to a stop over a 1/4 mile down the road, fortunately a straight level road with no other cars.

I live in Oregon and grew up in Western Pennsylvania, and I'll take deep snow over ice any day of the week (or weekend).

All the snows missing ohio now, we had about 7in the other week but its all melting now, I loved playin in the snow as youg kid, and now i love playin in the snow in the X. Be careful tho my friend just crashed his ST in the snow, go slow on ice, and 4x4 seems to work for me.

yea here in columbia, sc, we only get one good snow storm a year, and this year will be my first with my 4x4 explorer..i cant wait:D

scratched 95- how can you say he doesnt know what it is like to drive on 3 inches of snow when he just said he has 3 feet of snow there? does the 3 feet fall in one big block within 1 second? or does it go gradually so it goes from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 etc etc inches of snow at a time??

Scratched 95 didn't say that TunnelFear didn't know what it was like to drive on 3" of snow. What he said was that once the snow gets to a point that your tires don't melt through or dig through, the depth doesn't matter as much whether it be 6" or 36". Even on packed powder you can still get some traction if you have clearance and good tires. It is completely different than driving on pure ice. I have driven in up to 36" of snow. I have also driven on pure ice after a nice coating of freezing rain. Freezing rain is definately the more difficult of the two to get traction on.

If you have a wide tire with big tread they will be good. If you have an all season wide tire forget it. It will just ride on the very top and not dig in at all. A narrow tire will dig in better.

I know, it's really annoying too. I mean, they mentioned there might possibly be ice, and the supermarket and Home Depot were sold out of everything in a matter of hours
