hey guys,

i'm putting my mustang to rest tomorrow and out comes the sport-trac to guide me safely through the blustery Ontario winter.

I HATE the stock exhaust setup on the SportTrac, and all explorers for that matter. The stupid, rusty little tip at the back looks like crap.

heres what I want to do.

Order F150 Lightning Exhaust tips, and have them exit on the passenger side in the gap between where the running board ends and the rear passenger tire starts. I would weld in some type of new dual outlet muffler to accomadate the twin exhaust tips obviously.
My concern is that I'd be chopping the stock exhaust system by probably 5ft of piping or so....would this have any negative effects? ie. not enough back pressure.

I would really appreciate some comments, ideas...anything negative or positive

thanks guys

I would think that you'd be ok since your still going to have a muffler. Another idea is you could just go to a local muffler shop and get them to make you a custom setup. you could have both tips on one side or 1 tip on each side. I had mine ran out the back but I think 1 on each side would look great.

thanks for the reply!

I havent actually looked to see if this is feasible, I will be picking up my new sport-trac tomorrow and will check to see if theres enough room for the tips and to make sure nothing else is in the way to prevent me from doing this.

I think if i do it I'd go with the dual tips out one side, but I think singles out each side would look sharp aswell.

My MAIN CONCERN is the exhaust note. I will obviously have to switch to an aftermarket muffler, and combine that with the fact I would be eliminating a large portion of the stock exhaust pipe (lots of bends aswell) I'm quite concerned about the effect this will have on the tone of the exhaust.

any suggestions for mufflers? perhaps a 70 series flow?

I think the 70 series would be a great choice. Ive heard some side exhaust setups, and they sound good. I had a 67 Chevy pickup with glasspacks exiting one on each side and it was nice and deep at idle, but when you stomped it, it was the sweetest and loudest exhaust i had heard. Good Luck.

personally if your worried about the exhaust note, i would upgrade to a Borla Cat-back system. mine has a nice growl to it and has added power. The tip is really nice also. I dunno if they will exit in front of the tire, but I heard bad things about exiting exhaust in front of a tire...especially in snow conditions...thans why ford only had that setup on the 97 F150 and made the exhaust exit behind the rear tire in the 98 and up. I dunno if there is any truth to that, but it's just what I heard.

yep i'm concerned about the exhaust note, but I have no real interest in doing any exhaust work to the truck unless its this side exhaust setup I have in mind.

Im purely doing it for cosmetic reasons, as i think it would look sweet to have the lightning tips exiting in the gap between the end of the running board and the rear tire.

As far as concerns about exiting infront of the tire. I know one of the reasons ford stopped that on the F150 is they were having probs with it staining the rim. ..i dont know if there were any safety issues.
They still use the side exit on their 2 top of the line performers...the Lightning and 00 Cobra R

does anyone know if there are any safety concerns to consider?

thanks for all the comments guys, I really appreciate it
