I Will Soon Be Leaving On A 6,000 Mile Trip With My 98 Explorer Sohc 4 Litre V6. Is It Possible To Remove The Front Drive Shaft, Front Axles And Disconnect The Electronics ( Unplug The Transfercase Electric Connector ) So That I Won't Have All The Extra Drag From The Turning Transfer Case, Front Diff. Etc? Need Better Gas Mileage.

1. alignment
2. wheels balanced
3. put in slightly higher air pressure, like 35 to 38-39, people have done this with positive results
4. make sure all fluids are topping off and none of your brakes are "dragging' when not engaged
5. remove roof rack (seriously)

and if possible, stay behind 18 wheelers, they've slowed down some cause of fuel prices, but if you stay behind them you should be able to conserve fuel. if not an 18 wheeler, maybe a pack of cars ... let them do the work

welcome

If I'm not confusing the different generations, I believe that on the 98 the front differential will turn no matter what you do because the front driveshaft gets engaged at the transfer case when you turn 4x4 on. This means the front axles and differential will always turn no matter what.

I think the real question here is, will removing the transfer case and all related parts gain you MPG.

you're right, on a 98(gen2) they have a direct connection with the front wheels so you will be turning the front axle either way you slice it. You better off letting the 4wd system intact and following aldive's thread with some of the other mods that he implemented.

Welcome to this forum! Do a search for hypermileage. I wouldn't recommend all of the tricks since they are a little dangerous, but some things could help. Use the cruise control on the highway, eliminate any extra weight (in the vehicle, not your weight), don't tie things to the roof to cause wind resistance, keep all 4 tires properly inflated, synthetic fluids help, and make sure that your vehicle is properly tuned up.
