2001 Explorer sport
I have a 2001 explorer sport. It runs fine with the air off. I'm not a car genius to start off but I know a bit. So when you turn the air on doesn't matter to what hot, cold, defrost anything it idles low then really high. Something spinning in the motor is shutting on and off while it's doing this causing loud clicking as well. It hasn't died at all from it. Just sounds not so great for it.

Sounds like the A/C compressor is engaging and disengaging. Watch the A/C compressor clutch with the engine idling and see if you can see it engage and disengage when the issue occurs.

Try cleaning your IAC valve, then stand it on end and let a drop of oil run down the shaft into the bearing. Don't forget to pull the plastic cap and clean out the two felt filter pads and the hole into it behind them.
