Just curious, thanks.

Also, is it possible for me to replace the pulley? I know some pulleys have to be pressed on or off. Can I replace it with normal tools???

Thanks

If this is the pully on the top (above the fan) it is bolted on. I had to replace mine a month ago.

Idler pulleys are installed to maintain tension as the belt strecthes a little over time.

Yes, Normal tools

Idler Tension pulley. It's purpose is to provide tension on the belt ( allow you to remove the belt without un-bolting the altenator etc )

PArts stores carry them somewhere in teh $20 range I believe.

Simple to swap out.

Thanks Rob

I think you may have the Idler Pulley confused with the Tensioner Pulley?

I just looked thru my Chilton, and they are dif!

The Tensioner Pulley is used to apply tension. I know where this is and how it works.

The idler pulley is right next to the Alternator Pulley and the Tensioner Pulley is located below the Alternator Pulley.

The idler just gives an engineer a way to route the belt around all the pulleys so it "bites" enough of each pulley. I think.

and so there is another $20 part they can charge you $50 to replace when it take about 5min :)

I had to replace my Idler pully last month also. The bearings in it were going, it was squeeling like a mother.

You can replace it with normal tools. It's a 15mm bolt I believe. Then torque the new pully to 35-40 ft/lb.

Thanks BradE.

Sounds like it's pretty easy. Although, I dont think I have a torque wrench?

I didn't torque mine. Just cranked it down. Didn't see any instructions and did it on the highway so I wanted it done....NOW!!
