If your 4WD switch looks like this AUTO, 4HI, 4LO then...

I didn't do that. I just know i'm in 2wd when i start spinning!! haha

Happy trails!!

So you can disengauge and go into 2wd low while rolling or do you stop and let the vacuum disengauge?

I think that I am able to just slap her in and out of 2wd Hi and 4x4Auto while at any speed. Now all this does is lock up the front and make it a connected axle right?

So if that is the case then we should be able to do it rolling at a safe speed?

Well, mine is a 97 so i don't have the vacuum on my axle, just the strait shaft. I do mine any time i want to switch it, just like i would on my normal 4wd switch.

Happy trails!!

Fischer, I turn the front drive off anytime I wish, no problems.

So Jason,

On our 95's the brown wire disengages both the Axle Vacuum and the Clutch in the Transfer case or just the Clutch (4x4) engagement in the transfer case?

Mikefox posted the schematics and other info for the 95's in another thread: Dead Link Removed

The brown wire just supplies current to the transfer case clutch. There is another circuit from the GEM that engages the vacuum disconnect.

So on the 95-96s wouldn't we want to disengage the vacuum for the front diff as well? Or does it really matter.

I would think it better to NOT have the front axle completed as our hubs are always locked. Is this making sense?

I think of it this way on my buddy's ranger. Manually lock the hubs. Put in 4 Low, then disengage the frond drive though the hubs are still locked.

On our Explorers this would be essentially the same. As I would like to use this (2wd Low) on steep switchbacks where I get binding. I would think I would want the front axle seperated. Or does it actually matter as it is an open diff?

I am making this much more difficult than it needs to be> LOL

This "Brown" wire, looking at the schematic for my 97'
Couldn't you just remove the TOD relay? It looks like it is located on the drivers side of the dash just in back of the speedo cluster assy.

Comments?

We still want 4x4. Only 2wd low for pulling out a boat or just plain steep where 1st doesn't seem low enough. I think removing that would only allow 2wd.

I think that the binding is due to the t-case being locked and the front wheels are traveling at different speeds compared to the rear wheels.

Since the front is an open diff, you shouldn't get binding just because the left front wheel is moving faster (or slower) than the right front wheel. The differential takes care of this speed difference, just like it does for the rear wheels.

Although not applicaple to my 97, what does vacuum have to do with 4WD and axles? (in regard to the 95 model year)

BTW, Is it still a brown wire to the transfer case or does it change color on the connector under the seat?

TIA

i believe the wire is brown all the way through. the vaccuum disconnect would disengage the front axle like the hubs on a first gen.

Alfcapone, do you have any pictures of your instalation?
If you have any, could you mail them to me?
I have been interested of this mod. for a while.

sorry have no pic's

but there are a wiring diagram for a relay switch in this thread, i pretty much used that one, i got 12v and ground from the 12v connection by the ashtray, and i connected the brown wire(thick one) from GEM to the "30" connection on the relay, and let the "87a" go to the transcase, as suggested in the thread so if the fuse blows, the relay will connect the transcase to 4wd mode by default.
And then add ground to the relay "58" and 12+ to a switch (use a switch with a light in it so you can se when it's engaged, and then you need ground to the switch also) and then from the switch to the relay, its like connecting any relay really no sweat.
If you want to se the GEM working connect a bulb over the brown wire and ground, then it will glow when its just in stand by and light upp when you floor it, and the front cick's in!
You can get the brown wire without losen the front seat you just cut open the floormat under the seat where the seat cables goes throu, but its more difficult to get the cables to the consol where i put my relay and switch.
And i found out that i shuld have used 12+ from the ignition instead and not from the battery, now i have to remember to cut the switch when i leave the car, otherwise the relay steals power, not much but never the less...

lright I found thewire and am ready to cut it. You can get to it from under the drivers seat! Which one is it the brown wire at about 14awg or the tiny Brown/white stripe wire?

Dave, it's the big solid brown one.

Thanks I got it all set up to go. Gonna splice it tomorrow and I'll be all set.

For future reference to anyone. You can get to it where the batch of wires comes out from under the drivers seat, into the wire bunch at the edge of the seat near the door. There are two wire bunches and it is in the smaller one. I'll let you all know how it goes, and I am going wheeling this weekend so it will be nice!

I did it

Wow that was easy :D

Thanks everyone.

No more AUTO (unless I want it)
